Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) review: Intimate rom-com with sufficient thrills

Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows two strangers who sign up for a mysterious spy agency that pairs them as a married couple for their assignments. The series is streaming on Prime Video.

Story

Two people with relative experience are hired by a mysterious spy agency and paired together as a fake married couple.

They are given fake identities as Mr. & Mrs. Smith and sent out on various missions around the country and the globe.

During the missions, they go through high-pressure situations and this brings them closer together as a couple.

However, they can only fail three of their missions and are sworn to a lifetime contract, so going against the rules and failing have dire consequences for them.

Performances

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine have great chemistry together and perfectly capture what effective spies are like.

Glover and Erskine’s performances can only be analyzed as a unit because their respective characters rely on each other so much.

Glover is charming and funny while Erskine is equally delightful. Even the more dramatic sequences are convincing because of their efforts.

Many of the guest stars are fascinating in whatever capacity they appear in throughout the series.

Positives

The series is a wonderful blend of multiple genres and the balance is maintained consistently.

The focus on John and Jane’s relationship is the primary in the series and it is incorporated seamlessly into their missions.

There is an extremely clever use of color palettes and the wardrobe to depict certain moods.

Negatives

There are a lot of dead spaces in the series where the audience might find themselves wandering away from the screen.

The pacing can be lethargic at times and that work counts against the overall experience of the series.

Verdict

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) is a wonderful reboot that adds a brilliant spin to the story of the titular characters. The writing is insightful and there are many artistic techniques used in the making that will appeal to audiences.
