Mr. Gu: Gyeongseong Creature character explained

Mr. Gu is Tae-sang’s employee who is forced to betray him. In Gyeongseong Creature, Park Ji-hwan plays Mr. Gu.

Mr. Gu is one of Tae-sang’s three employees. He is extremely loyal to Tae-sang, as Tae-sang has saved his life multiple times.

Mr. Gu manages Tae-sang’s pawn shop, attending to customers and negotiating over the price of items they bring to the House of Golden Treasure.

Despite haggling, Mr. Gu, being a kind man, ends up generously paying the customers in need of money.

Mr. Gu’s arrest

As Mr. Gu is Tae-sang’s trusted employee, he is aware of all of Tae-sang’s dealings as well as the identities of his informants.

Whenever Tae-sang needs information, it is Mr. Gu who contacts the informants on his behalf.

He performs various tasks for Tae-sang, playing a crucial role in all of Tae-sang’s plans, whether it involves accompanying him to the hospital as his driver or sending a signal for Chae-ok and her father.

When Tae-sang goes to the hospital to rescue Myeong-ja and decides to help the prisoners escape, he forms a plan that requires Mr. Gu to sneak into the hospital with Ishikawa.

Mr. Gu is well aware that if he goes to the hospital, he will be risking his life. However, he still follows Tae-sang’s orders.

It pains Mr. Gu to leave the hospital without Tae-sang, but he does it anyway because he knows that he cannot deviate from Tae-sang’s plan.

Ishikawa’s policemen then follow Mr. Gu to kill the prisoners, but Mr. Gu manages to get all the prisoners to safety.

He is caught by the policemen, but he refuses to tell them where the prisoners went; he claims that Myeong-ja is the only prisoner he rescued. This results in Mr. Gu’s arrest.

Mr. Gu’s betrayal

Mrs. Nawol, who has been tortured before, had earlier told Mr. Gu how a person stops caring about everything, including their friends and family, when they are tortured.

She had advised Mr. Gu not to be a hero if he ever found himself in a similar situation. She had assured him that she would not hate him if he betrayed her.

Mr. Gu was sure that he would never betray the people of the House of Golden Treasure because he considers them his family.

However, when he is tortured by the policemen, he eventually reveals details about Tae-sang’s dealings after enduring the pain for as long as he can.

The incident breaks Mr. Gu. He carries the guilt of betraying the man who gave him a home and a good life long after he returns to the House of Golden Treasure.

When Tae-sang discovers that Mr. Gu betrayed him, he does not hold it against him because he understands that Mr. Gu was forced to do it.

In fact, he defends Mr. Gu and his other employees in front of Lady Maeda. This deepens Mr. Gu’s respect for Tae-sang, and he continues to serve him loyally.
