Kwon Jun-taek: Gyeongseong Creature character explained

Kwon Jun-taek is a rebel who sneaks into Ongseong Hospital with Tae-sang. In Gyeongseong Creature, Wi Ha-joon plays Kwon Jun-taek.

Kwon Jun-taek, who owns a bar in Gyeongseong, is Jang Tae-sang’s friend. While Tae-sang is a self-made man, Jun-taek comes from a wealthy family.

Jun-taek’s father owns the Bugang Company and has ties with the director of Ongseong Hospital, Ichiro.

His father remains unaware that his son is part of a rebel group, the Joseon Patriotic Society, that seeks to free Joseon from Japanese rule.

Serving his country

Jun-taek’s father has amassed his wealth by dealing with the Japanese. Jun-taek has never liked the fact that his father is betraying his country for riches.

He acknowledges the privilege of living a life of luxury, but he is also ashamed of his life and his father’s business.

Jun-taek dreams of doing something meaningful and big in his life, so he joins the Joseon Patriotic Society to fight for his country’s freedom.

Due to his father’s close association with the Japanese, Jun-taek is able to gather intelligence for the Joseon Patriotic Society.

He has been friends with Tae-sang for years now, but he has not been able to convince Tae-sang to join the rebel group or use his money for their country’s independence.

Breaking into the hospital

Jun-taek discovers that a fundraiser rally for all the Japanese frontline generals will be held at Bumingwan in a few weeks and tells the Joseon Patriotic Society about it.

As all the leaders of Japanese occupation forces and the leaders of pro-Japanese groups will be there, the society plans to launch a secret attack.

However, Lee, the rebel who knows where the dynamite that is needed for the secret attack is hidden, gets arrested. Lee is taken to the prison in Ongseong Hospital’s basement.

When Jun-taek finds out that Tae-sang is going to sneak into Ongseong Hospital to rescue Myeong-ja, he decides to accompany him.

Tae-sang warns Jun-taek that he will not be able to get him out of the hospital, but Jun-taek is willing to take the risk.

When Tae-sang’s group is caught by a Japanese soldier, Jun-taek abandons the group and goes to look for Lee on his own.

Jun-taek finds Lee, but it turns out that he has no intention of rescuing Lee; he only wants to know where the dynamite is hidden.

Even when Jun-taek promises to return to the prison later and rescue him, Lee refuses to give up the location of the dynamite.

The Japanese soldiers then find Jun-taek. He is neither able to find the dynamite’s hidden place, nor is he able to rescue his comrades.

Jun-taek’s betrayal

Ichiro does not intend to kill Jun-taek, as he plans to use Jun-taek to extort his father for money.

However, he allows his men to teach Jun-taek a lesson. Jun-taek is injected with something and threatened with torture.

He then ends up giving the Japanese the names of the people who have broken into the hospital, including Tae-sang’s name.

Additionally, he also gives them the names of all the members of the Joseon Patriotic Society. Betraying his friends and comrades takes an emotional toll on Jun-taek.

With the help of Mrs. Nawol, Jun-taek’s father is able to get him released. Jun-taek returns home deeply traumatized, unable to stop trembling and pleading for mercy.
