In Fool Me Once, Judith Burkett is the mother of Joe Burkett. Joanna Lumley plays Judith.
Judith Burkett is a grieving mother who has also been a psychiatrist for the past 40 years. Since Joe’s death, Judith has been constantly pushing Maya to seek professional help, as she has lost both her husband and sister in a very short span.
Maya and Judith don’t share a great relationship. According to Maya, Judith has always looked down upon her and hasn’t been welcoming to her.
Judith’s plot
Maya finds herself in a web where it seems like Joe is still alive when she sees Joe on her nanny cam, playing with Lily.
Other clues, such as Detective Kierce being paid by the Burketts and Caroline’s claims about seeing her brother Andrew, further complicate Maya’s investigation. However, to the outside world, Maya looks like a deranged person.
Towards the end, after uncovering the murders Joe has committed and learning about the drugs of Burkett Global Enterprises that are killing people now, Maya finds out what Judith’s plot has been.
Judith has been protecting her family and their business. She protected Joe even when he was responsible for Andrew’s death.
When she lost Joe, she doubted Maya, who indeed killed Joe as revenge for murdering her sister.
Judith staged Joe’s return using Izabella, Luka, and deepfake technology and followed them up with clues that drew Maya crazy, or at least made her look like she was going crazy.
The fall of Burketts
After exposing Judith in front of her children, Caroline and Neil, Maya admits that she killed Judith’s son.
Though Maya will be behind bars, she claims that the world is finding out about the Burketts’ secrets.
Judith offers Maya a deal where they will put all the blame on Joe, but Maya thinks it’s too late for that. Neil agrees and kills Maya.
What he doesn’t know is that their conversation is being live-streamed online through Maya’s nanny cam.
Following Maya’s death, Judith, Neil, and Caroline are taken into custody. Their mansion is raided by the police.
