Jimmy Chang: The Gentlemen character explained

Jimmy Chang is a supporting character who provides a lot of comic relief in the British crime comedy drama, The Gentlemen. Michael Vu plays the character in the show, currently streaming on Netflix.

Jimmy Chang is the product supervisor working for Susie Glass, and he grows, tends to, and supervises the production of high-quality cannabis.

Jimmy grows and takes care of a lot of weed, but he also smokes a lot of it, being constantly dazed and high out of his mind, as he talks with nonchalance and quirky phrases.

Duality of Jimmy

He’s great at what he does, but equally terrible at almost all the other things.

While each new strain of the weed or coming up with a new breed of the puff he grows comes naturally to him, simpler things elude him.

During a delivery run, he stops by his usual spot where he orders his usual meal. A beautiful girl named Gabrielle introduces herself.

She likes the things he likes, and it’s a beautiful series of coincidences and a beautiful face that draw Jimmy right in.

He is taken by her charms and while she distracts him and quietly steals the keys off him, her associate takes them to start up his van parked outside and drives off.

By the time he comes outside, the van full of drums full of weed is already gone.

He still doesn’t have the capacity or cynical heart to doubt his pretty Gabrielle, who shares her number with a delighted and starry-eyed Jimmy.

A mosaic of mistakes

He then ends up having quite a whirlwind of a trip on his way back to the Halstead estate. Gamekeeper Geoff spots him in the estate lying on his stomach, bare naked, knocked out.

He’s brought in to Susie, who interrogates him, and even after listening to his account of his own frustratingly stupid mistakes, she doesn’t do anything to him.

Later on, Jimmy also tells Eddie, and Gabrielle, the home address of Susie, which he once found out himself.

It is supposed to be a top secret that no one is supposed to know about, not even Jimmy. However, apart from himself, he ends up sharing it with two others.

Gabrielle, who’s hired by Stanley Johnston, ends up learning her address and Susie is soon threatened by her enemy Henry Glass, also hired by Stanley.

Too valuable to lose

She confronts Jimmy about it and he confesses. Susis still doesn’t do anything to him. It is because as error-prone as he is, Jimmy is honest and loyal to a fault.

He is stupid by many accounts, but a genius when it comes to his job.

Without him present and working on the weed farming, their business would be impacted in the worst of ways.

Susie recognizes that, and so she tolerates him and his oft-repeated mistakes.
