Jack Rooney is one of the people selected to try out the game designed by the San-Ti to pick out who is worthy.
Jin shows Jack the game that she got from Ye Wenjie but when he tries to play it, he is killed by the San-Ti.
When he returns home, he finds a device waiting for him. It has the same goal, but the setting is based on something more familiar to him.
He and Jin begin discussing and playing the game together, even though Auggie asks them to stop.
The game asks them to find a solution that saves a civilization, and Jin is certain she knows how.
One step too far
Jack and Jin pass level three and receive an invitation to enter level four at a secondary location.
They head over there and meet Tatiana Haas, one of the main followers of Mark Evans. She asks them to proceed to the next level in the game so they put on their headsets.
They learn about the San-Ti and how they are an extra-terrestrial species that is headed to Earth, and Tatiana is part of a group working to welcome them.
Jin is convinced but Jack feels that this is a scam and leaves after being told that he is free to do so.
He goes home, and Clarence is staking the place out. When Jack heads inside, he finds that there is no internet or phone signal in the house.
He heads up to his room and sees Tatiana waiting for him. She tells him that he is better off joining them.
He tries to threaten her but she pushes him against the window and then stabs him in the neck.
Jack’s murder is captured on the camera but Tatiana doesn’t show up because of the advanced technology they possess.
