How is Tozawa still alive in Tokyo Vice season 2?

Tozawa was looking quite unwell and was traveling abroad at the end of season 1, but he returned with a renewed vigor, raising many questions.

Jake and Katagiri learn that Tozawa is sick with something but they aren’t sure what it is. The video of Polina showed the Minister for Foreign Affairs, which gave them some clues.

Misaki tells Jake that Tozawa has returned and that he’s looking healthy, so Jake decides to follow him and find out more.

He is led to a government building that houses a clinic, and Jake sneaks in to look at Tozawa’s records.

Jake finds out that Tozawa was suffering from liver disease, colloquially known as “illness of the trade” as it is quite common thanks to the Yakuza lifestyle.

Katagiri says that transplants aren’t common in Japan, and Tozawa couldn’t get his name off the no-fly list to the US despite blackmailing the Foreign Minister.

By any means necessary

Sato tells Jake that a German doctor in Thailand provides a treatment that could extend one’s life by 6 months, and that is one theory they look at.

Tozawa is shown with a scar on his abdomen, suggesting that he did go through surgery.

There is no update on that case until Katagiri stumbles on a call to Tozawa’s hotel landline. Someone from the Southern Minnesota Medical Center calls about an outstanding payment.

Jake is back home for his father’s birthday and Katagiri requests him to go to Minnesota and check out the lead.

He meets with Dr. Edward Walker who is the head of the organ transplantation at the facility and notices that he’s wearing a very expensive watch.

After applying some pressure, Jake discovers that Tozawa traveled to the facility and jumped the line for a transplant before bribing Dr. Walker for his discretion.

Katagiri and Jake find out how he recovered, but they are still unsure how he managed to travel to the US without issue and Katagiri asks Jake to return so they can investigate further.
