Plot summary

Charlie Morningstar, the daughter of Lucifer and Lillith, starts a hotel meant to rehabilitate the souls of Hell so they can get to Heaven.

She gets this idea to avoid the yearly exterminations that Adam and his exorcist angels carry out due to overpopulation in the Underworld.

Charlie has the help of her partner, Vaggie, and a mysterious overlord named Alastor, also known as the Radio Demon.

Alastor enlists Husk and Niffty to be the staff in the hotel since he owns their souls. He also suggests the name ‘Hazbin Hotel’ for the venture.

Their one resident so far is Angel Dust, a well-known pornstar down in Hell who doesn’t seem too keen on redemption.

There’s also Sir Pentious, a demon who attacks the hotel for recognition from the Vees. He fails spectacularly, but Charlie gives him a second chance to fix things.

The Vees are three overlords who control a large part of the Pentagram and have a hold over countless souls.

Valentino owns Angel’s soul and puts him through immense pressure whenever Angel is at work.

Vox is a television demon who lost to Alastor many years ago and has an intense hatred for the radio demon.

Velvette enjoys stirring things up and revels in the chaos that she brings. When Carmilla Carmine calls a meeting of the overlords, Velvette shows up and causes a disruption.

She brings out the decapitated head of an angel exorcist which is proof that the angels can be killed.

She wants to take the fight to the angels, but Carmilla proposes caution. What the others do not know is that Carmilla is the one who killed the angel to protect her daughters.

Alastor finds this key piece of information and keeps it to himself for the right occasion.

Adam and his second-in-command, Lute, are monitoring the situation regarding the dead exorcist and excited about the next extermination.

Charlie attends a meeting with Adam on behalf of her father, but rather than listen to her idea of the hotel, he informs her that the extermination has been pushed forward six months.

Angel makes huge strides towards becoming better with help from Husk. Lucifer visits the hotel to try and connect with his daughter.

She asks him to set up a meeting for her with Heaven to convince them of her concept. When she goes to Heaven, she meets Sera, the head seraphim, and Emily, one of the younger seraphim.

Emily is open to listening but Sera makes decisions for the “greater good”. She and Adam have kept the exterminations a secret from the rest of Heaven.

However, when Charlie appears to be making a good case, Adam lets slip about the extermination.

Charlie tries to call out the hypocrisy of Heaven but Adam reveals the truth about Vaggie to throw Charlie off her game.

Vaggie used to be an exorcist, but when she showed pity for a demon during an extermination, Lute pulled off her wings and plucked out her eye.

She was left to die until Charlie found her and got close to her. Charlie feels betrayed by this omission and wallows in her room.

Alastor offers to help her with some information in exchange for a favor at any time of his choosing. Despite Vaggie’s warnings not to do it, she makes a deal with him.

He tells Charlie that Carmilla killed an angel, so Vaggie is sent to learn how to defeat one. Alastor and Charlie visit Rosie, the overlord controlling the cannibals in Cannibal Town.

Charlie and Vaggie set up the hotel as their bastion for the battle with Adam and his angels with the help of the cannibals and angelic weapons that Carmilla provided.

Ending Explained:

Starting strong

Adam and the angels attack the hotel and the demons of Hell do a good job accounting for themselves and putting to use the training they got.

Alastor creates a barrier around the hotel to keep out additional attackers and give them the numbers advantage.

Adam becomes frustrated and breaks down the barrier. He then takes on Alastor singlehandedly.

While Alastor can hold his own and even wound Adam, the angel proves too much for him and the radio demon makes a quick exit before he is killed.

The Vees and the rest of Hell watch all of this unfold as Vox ridicules Charlie’s efforts to fight back.

Turning the tide

With Alastor gone, the angels begin to overwhelm the forces of Hell and Charlie and Vaggie exclaim that someone needs to take care of Adam.

Sir Pentious sees this as his moment to shine and after planting a kiss on Cherry Bomb and professing his love, he gets on his ship and flies toward Adam.

He’s about to activate his death ray when Adam notices and wipes him out with a snap of his fingers.

Charlie is devasted and with a blend of sadness and anger, attacks Adam. She is almost matching him for power but Adam is too strong.

He’s about to strike her down when Lucifer shows up to back her daughter. The King of Hell shows up and immediately the angels are pegged back.

Vaggie takes on Lute and defeats her, while Lucifer and Charlie beat Adam into submission.

They show him mercy but Niffty stabs him quite unexpectedly. With Adam dead, Lute is told to return to Heaven with the rest of the angels.

A new dawn

With the exterminations done for at least the moment, Charlie and her friends begin rebuilding the hotel that was destroyed in the battle.

Alastor barely escapes with his life and promises to find a loophole in the secret deal that he is beholden to so that he can be free to pull the strings in Hell.

Sir Pentious appears in Heaven as an angel thanks to his noble sacrifice and it proves that Charlie’s idea has merit.

Lute takes Adam’s halo and drops it in front of Lillith who has been hiding out in Heaven. She talks of some deal that Lillith made which is now void.

Lute tells Lillith that she needs to go down to Hell and put a stop to Charlie’s ambitions or she cannot stay in Heaven anymore.
