Alamzeb is one of the main characters in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Sharmin Segal plays the character in the show.
Alamzeb dreams of becoming a poetess while trapped in the golden cage of Shahi Mahal, the elite house of courtesan in Heeramandi, that her mother, Mallikajaan, runs with a dictatorial fervor.
Dreams & romance
Mallikajaan wants Alamzeb to become the next Huzoor, after her. However, Alam can not agree to her debut and insists on chasing her dreams instead of following her mother’s footsteps.
She meets Tajdar when she sneaks out to go see her favorite poet and falls for him at first sight, a romantic development that’s mutual. She has a run-in with him once more.
Later, when Fareedan learns about this budding romance, she tries to manipulate Alam and progress her love story with Tajdar, using lies and deception. Despite her intentions, she ends up facilitating their love story.
Love & hurdles
When Tajdar learns Alamzeb is from Heeramandi, he is reluctant towards her but offers her refuge at his house for a while, and eventually, the truth about her comes out to his family members.
Tajdar decides to marry her. He also goes against his father regarding this decision. Their love blossoms and Alam soon falls pregnant.
Their marriage is stopped when Tajdar is arrested for his rebel activities, something his Nawab father intentionally asks his British officers to do so that he can stop his son from marrying a woman from the community of courtesans.
Grief & the fight for freedom
The British officer ends up being the reason behind Tajdar’s death, he gives up his life but doesn’t confess the identities or the truth about his freedom-fighting comrades.
Alamzeb is wrecked on the night of her marriage, and she has to make her debut when her lover doesn’t make it, as was the condition of her mother. However, when she learns he’s dead, she goes silent altogether.
In her trauma and shock, she doesn’t eat for four days and remains in a lifeless state. Her sister Bibbo helps her recover from this state by letting her grieve at her would-be husband’s grave.
Following in her lover’s footsteps, she marches on as a patriot against the colonizers.
