Plot summary

As Myeong-ja had consumed the Najin, the parasite takes control of her brain. At night, Myeong-ja goes around town, killing people by ripping their brains out.

When Lady Maeda comes to the hospital to see the creature, Tae-sang, who is severely injured, threatens her with his gun and forces her to help him get out of the hospital.

Even though Tae-sang loses consciousness soon after, Lady Maeda does not turn him in. Instead, she takes him home and nurses him back to health.

Tae-sang wakes up four days after Chae-ok and the prisoners left the hospital. He tells Lady Maeda that he has changed; he cares about his people now.

He helped the prisoners escape not just because they were his countrymen but because he is a human being and he could not leave them to die.

Mr. Gu, as well as all the people who helped the prisoners escape, are in police custody. Mr. Gu is tortured, and he ends up telling the police about Tae-sang’s dealings.

Once Tae-sang recovers, he goes to meet Ishikawa to get his people released. Tae-sang succeeds by threatening Ishikawa and giving him information about the human experiments.

Tae-sang becomes his people’s savior after getting them released from prison. He then pays Chae-ok, who has been waiting for him to return, a visit, and they reunite.

Lady Maeda and Ishikawa’s marriage is a marriage of convenience, but Lady Maeda felt humiliated when she heard about Myeong-ja’s pregnancy.

When Lady Maeda sent Myeong-ja to the hospital, Ichiro did something to her. It is possible that he fed her the Najin when she was brought to the hospital.

As Myeong-ja was just given the Najin and not the other serum that is administered with it, she turns into a predator with enhanced abilities but retains her human appearance.

Ishikawa, furious at Lady Maeda for what was done to Myeong-ja, tries to hurt his wife by telling her that Tae-sang, the man she likes as more than a friend, is in love with someone else.

Tae-sang and Chae-ok come across Myeong-ja, who is on a killing spree. Myeong-ja stops attacking and regains her senses when she is called by her name.

Myeong-ja is captured by the police. As she has killed several people, Ishikawa no longer wants anything to do with her or her child.

Ishikawa tries to send her back to the hospital in a cage, which leads to Myeong-ja attacking him. Myeong-ja is taken back to the hospital and locked in prison all by herself.

Due to Myeong-ja’s attack, Ishikawa is dying. Lady Maeda does not want to keep him alive, so Ichiro kills Ishikawa.

Kato not only shows Lady Maeda the creature that he has created but also tells her all about the Najin. It turns out that Lady Maeda knew Chae-ok’s mother, Seishin.

Lady Maeda wants Kato to train Seishin. She wants Seishin to obey her and become her weapon. To make that possible, she makes Kato the director of the hospital.

Upon learning that Seishin is a monster now, Chae-ok’s father, Jung-won, goes back to the hospital to be with his wife.

Tae-sang and Chae-ok plan to sneak into the hospital once again to save Jung-won and Myeong-ja. Knowing that they might not return alive, they confess their feelings.

Ishikawa’s death is blamed on a Joseon doctor, and Tae-sang realizes that it is not long before the Japanese come for Tae-sang, so he joins Kwon Jun-taek’s rebel group.

On the other hand, Chae-ok decides to get revenge for what was done to her mother and assassinates Ichiro. She is then kidnapped by Lady Maeda.

Seishin has been agitated since she met Chae-ok. She keeps trying to break her prison door and succeeds eventually.

Tae-sang finds out about Chae-ok’s disappearance. Due to his association with her, the House of Golden Treasures is raided, as Mori, one of Ishikawa’s men, had warned him.

Lady Maeda meets Tae-sang and lies to him that Chae-ok is dead. If Tae-sang forgets about Chae-ok and does as she says, he and his pawn shop will be safe.

Tae-sang refuses to give up on finding Chae-ok and stands up to Lady Maeda, turning her into his enemy. Lady Maeda then reveals that Tae-sang’s loyal employees and friends have all betrayed him.

Mr. Gu told the police about Tae-sang’s dealings when he was tortured, Beom-o had been spying on Tae-sang for Lady Maeda, and Mrs. Nawol betrayed Tae-sang’s mother.

Tae-sang knew about Mrs. Nawol’s betrayal, and he understands that she, as well as the others, were forced to turn on their friends.

The fact that Tae-sang does not hold their betrayal against them or detest them brings Beom-o back to the House of Golden Treasure, and he tells Tae-sang that Chae-ok was taken to the hospital.

Tae-sang gets the dynamite from the rebel group and goes to the hospital with the intention of blowing it up and rescuing Chae-ok.

Just as Seishin attacks Kato and his men, Tae-sang enters the hospital. Tae-sang runs into Jung-won in the air vents and informs him about his plan to demolish the hospital.

Jung-won decides that he will stay behind and demolish the hospital, as he is ready to die with his wife. He sees a future for Chae-ok with Tae-sang, so he asks Tae-sang to rescue his daughter.

While Tae-sang finds Chae-ok and saves her from the soldiers, Jung-won blows up the hospital and dies. However, Seishin survives the blast.

A lot of Kato’s test tubes containing the Najin as well as the other serum bottles are destroyed, but Kato survives.

Sachimoto, who is returning to Japan soon, finds Tae-sang and Chae-ok and helps them get out of the hospital, but not before apologizing to Chae-ok for not telling her about her mother.

Ending explained:

The choice to stay

After making it out alive, Chae-ok tries to break up with Tae-sang. She wants them to go their separate ways.

As she assassinated Ishikawa, she is a wanted criminal. She is aware that she will be on the run for the rest of her life, and she does not want Tae-sang to be dragged into her mess.

However, Tae-sang has no qualms about giving up his life in Gyeongseong to be with her. He will do whatever is necessary to stay by her side, as he cannot imagine his life without her.

Protecting the one you love

Mrs. Nawol gets the message that Tae-sang is alive. She immediately packs gold bars, cash, and other valuables in a bag to send to Tae-sang.

Eager to prove his loyalty, Beom-o takes the bag to Tae-sang. Beom-o is followed by Lady Maeda and her men, and despite his best efforts to lose them, he fails.

Lady Maeda finds Chae-ok and Tae-sang. She reveals that Seishin used to be her friend, but she went against her, just like Tae-sang.

She orders her men to kill Chae-ok and Tae-sang, who have no chance of surviving against her small army.

Seishin finds Chae-ok and Tae-sang while they are fighting Lady Maeda’s men. She kills the men, allowing Chae-ok and Tae-sang to escape.

However, Seishin comes after them. Not realizing that Tae-sang is trying to protect Chae-ok, she attacks him as well.

Chae-ok pushes Tae-sang away and gets stabbed by Seishin’s tentacles. Chae-ok begs her mother not to harm Tae-sang because she loves him.

Seishin stops trying to kill Tae-sang, but Chae-ok is mortally wounded. Chae-ok then dies in Tae-sang’s arms.

The fight for freedom comes to an end

After Chae-ok’s death, Jun-taek attends Ishikawa’s funeral. He gives Lady Maeda a farewell card from Tae-sang, and she realizes that he has sent flowers from all the people she has hurt.

Lady Maeda tries to get out of the room, but just then a dynamite explodes, and she is caught up in the explosion.

Joseon gains its independence in August of that year. The people of Gyeongseong celebrate their freedom. They consider Tae-sang a true patriot.

Tae-sang goes back to being his old self after the whole ordeal is over, but he is not the same. He misses Chae-ok, and her absence hurts him.

The Najin’s influence

While running away from the creature, Kato found Myeong-ja, who then died giving birth to her child. Kato gets to keep her child, who is born with the Najin inside it.

Now that Joseon is finally free, the Ongseong Hospital is officially closing. Kato comes to see Lady Maeda, who survived the explosion but not without damage.

She is in a wheelchair now, and her body is deformed. Kato offers her a cup of water and asks her whether she will return to Japan or stay with him to explore new possibilities.

When he gets no reply, he smiles and leaves, with the cup of water still in front of Lady Maeda, suggesting that she can use the Najin to recover.

On the other hand, Seishin is seen holding Chae-ok’s body underwater. She releases a grown Najin from her body and feeds it to Chae-ok. This results in Seishin’s death and Chae-ok coming back to life.

Years later, a man who looks just like Tae-sang watches South Korea’s development over the years on his TV. The man has a strange mark on his nape and is called Ho-jae.
