The second season of Sweet Home introduces Dr. Lim, a scientist who has been conducting experiments on monsters to develop a vaccine. Oh Jung-Se plays Dr. Lim.
An emergency bureau is set up by the government to deal with the threat of monsterization. Dr. Lim, a scientist, is in charge of conducting experiments on various kinds of monsters to understand monsterization and to find a cure for it.
According to Lim’s theory, monsterization is the planet’s response to human greed destroying it. If humankind is a virus that poses a threat to the planet, then monsterization is a vaccine.
Lim’s inhumane scientific pursuit
Lim has been conducting experiments on monsters and special infectees, also known as MHs, for some time now. He was friends with Yi-kyung’s fiancé, Nam Sang-won, who was also subjected to his painful experiments.
Eventually, Hyun-su, who wants to help humans, allows Lim to experiment on him. Lim comes to know that Hyun-su can somehow control the monsters; he considers it a breakthrough.
Although Hyun-su is a neohuman, he is still treated as a lab rat. Lim only cares about his research; the monsters and their lives mean nothing to him. He has no qualms about killing monsters once they are of no use to him.
Lim claims to have developed a vaccine to prevent humans from turning into monsters. However, he has hidden the vaccine somewhere and refuses to give it to the prime minister, even when the minister shoots him.
When the prime minister decides to bomb survivor camps to eradicate the threat of monsterization, Lim does not protest. Several people lose their lives, but Master Sergeant Tak manages to stop him before all the survivors are killed.
After the attack, the survivors start living underground. Master Sergeant Tak gives Dr. Lim a lab to continue his research. However, as he is not allowed to go out, he fails to make any progress.
A symbol of false hope
Almost a year after moving underground, Lim comes across something that piques his interest. Yi-kyung’s daughter turns Jun-il into a monster. Jun-il’s case is unique, as he shows no symptoms and his transformation is rapid.
Lim takes Jun-il to see his mother, who is turning into a monster. His careless actions result in Jun-il’s body exploding after killing his mother. It is then that Lim finds out why Master Sergeant Tak kept him alive.
Master Sergeant Tak does not want Lim to continue his research, as he does not think that Lim can do much. He let Lim live because Lim represents hope. People believe that they might be able to get vaccines as long as Lim is alive.
Lim, who knows that Master Sergeant Tak has PTSD, makes a deal with him. He cannot treat monsterization, but he can turn Master Sergeant Tak into a special infectee if he allows Lim to accompany the soldiers to the Bamseom Bureau.
At the bureau, instead of recovering the assets, Lim stays near the monsters that are undergoing a change. Lim then follows a monster, who turns out to be Nam Sang-won, the friend Lim subjected to painful experiments. Lim’s life now rests in Nam Sang-won’s hands.
