Carlos Ferreira: Luz: The Light of the Heart character explained

Carlos Ferreira, played by Celso Frateschi, is Luz’s grandfather who serves as the primary antagonist in Luz: The Light of the Heart.

Carlos is a rich farmer who believes that everyone is after his wealth. He advises his son, Lucas, to be wary of people who may try to exploit him.

Carlos’s paranoia about his wealth leads him to believe that Dora, the girl his son wants to marry, is a gold digger. Carlos forbids Lucas from marrying Dora.

He wants Lucas to marry the girl of his choice, live in the same house as him, and take over the business. However, Lucas refuses to end his relationship with Dora, who is pregnant with his baby.

In fact, Lucas is ready to leave Carlos and his wealth for Dora and their daughter. The night Luz is born, Lucas meets with an accident on his way to the hospital.

Lucas passes away, and Carlos blames Dora and Luz for his son’s death. His anger toward them drives him to harm them, even years after Lucas’ death.

A man obsessed with protecting his wealth

To avenge Lucas’ death, Carlos has Luz stolen from her mother, who is made to believe that her daughter passed away.

He then asks his right-hand man, Baltazar, to leave her in the forest to die. Nine years later, he finds out that Baltazar did not follow his order and that Luz is alive.

He fears that Luz might one day inherit his farm, so he takes drastic measures to prevent it. He forgives Baltazar and gives him a chance to rectify his mistake.

He asks Baltazar to find Luz and bring her to him. He also employs his trusted employee, Valéria, who is revealed to be his illegitimate daughter, to keep an eye on Baltazar and the Kaingang.

When Carlos’ people fail to find Luz, he starts intimidating the community. Additionally, he asks his men to look for Luz’s biological mother.

Baltazar finds Luz’s mother, but as he goes to inform Gá about it, Carlos does not hesitate to have him killed.

He introduces himself to Dora as Alberto, a lawyer, and continues to visit her in the hope of finding Luz. When Luz does not turn up, he pays Dora’s boyfriend to set fire to her bookstore.

Carlos meets Dora and provides false information about himself

While Carlos loved his wife and son, he does not feel the same love for Valéria. He even refuses to accept her as his daughter, convinced that she, like everyone else, only wants his money.

Carlos’s mistaken belief about people’s motives does not let him have a meaningful relationship with his daughter and granddaughter. In the end, he is left all by himself.

However, he still does not learn from his mistakes and continues to plot ways to separate Luz from her mother and the community that raised her.
