Yun Ja-yu: Blood Free character explained

Yun Ja-yu, the CEO of BF, seeks to change the world with her invention. Han Hyo-joo plays Yun Ja-yu in Blood Free.

Yun Ja-yu was one of the four CEOs who were with President Lee Mun-gyu on the day of the AZORAN explosion.

Lee Mun-gyu is convinced that Ja-yu was behind the attack on him, as he had to step down after the attack and Ja-yu was the one who benefited the most from it.

Lee Mun-gyu sends Chae-woon to work for Ja-yu as her bodyguard. It is while working for Ja-yu that Chae-woon comes to know her and her secrets.

Ja-yu’s motivation

Ja-yu and On San used to be Professor Kim’s students. Ja-yu ended up leaving the university because Professor Kim took them for an epidemiological survey.

During the survey, Ja-yu witnessed such animal cruelty that made her averse to meat. This incident motivated her to work on creating cultured meat.

On top of that, Ja-yu’s twin sister, who went to study abroad, contracted mad cow disease, which turned her previously healthy sibling into a bedridden person with dementia.

Ja-yu helplessly watched her sister suffer and then pass away. Her sister’s death motivated Ja-yu to change the world.

The loss of her sister left her with no family; Ja-yu cut off her parents after her mother committed financial fraud.

Ja-yu then dedicated her life to changing the world. She made no friends, with her colleagues being her only acquaintances.

Revolutionary inventions

Ja-yu realizes that human beings, despite being the dominant species, are not perfect yet, as they depend on plants and animals for their food.

To make humans the perfect dominant species, Ja-yu decides to invent cultured meat. For that, she asks Professor Kim and On San to join her.

Ja-yu establishes BF for this purpose and eventually succeeds. Her company becomes the first to successfully produce cultured meat.

After that, BF begins working on producing cultured seafood as well as grain. However, cultured food is just the beginning.

Ja-yu’s main objective has always been to successfully create cultured organs, blood, and various human tissues.

Ja-yu always hoped to replace her sister’s organs with healthy ones and save her life. She did not have the means then, but she is now closer to achieving her goal.

While she failed to save Professor Kim’s wife’s life with her technology, she succeeded in saving Chae-woon, even though her experiments were not legal.

She is aware that human beings cannot live forever. All she wants is to find a way for humans to not feel pain until the day they die.

She is using top-notch technology to save lives. She believes that mass production of organs will eventually make them affordable to all.

Ja-yu’s inventions threaten people’s livelihoods and are also sought after by people like Chairman Seonu, which makes Ja-yu a target.

The attacks on her life trigger her PTSD from the AZORAN explosion. Although she hides her condition from everyone else, Chae-woon discerns her vulnerabilities.

With time, Ja-yu grows to care about Chae-woon, who starts realizing that Ja-yu is not the terrorist he is looking for.
