The Royal Family’s assassination in Rebel Moon explained

In Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, the truth behind Kora’s crime is revealed, linking her to the assassination of the Royal Family.

Under the rule of the Royal Family, the Motherworld prospered for centuries due to generations of war and conquest.

However, the royal family is eventually assassinated, marking the end of a line that has produced hundreds of kings.

The family is betrayed by those they had trusted the most, and this assassination makes Kora the most wanted criminal in the known universe.

A failed assassination

While the age of expansion under the monarchy sees the destruction of many worlds, there is still hope for a better future.

The birth of Princess Issa, who is mythicized as the Chalice or the Redeemer, is to usher in a new age of peace and compassion.

Her birth brings about a change in the King: his perspective changes and he seeks to put an end to the age of expansion.

On the day of Princess Issa’s coronation, the King is to dedicate a ship called the Peacemaker, which bears the Princess’ seal, to symbolize the said end.

However, the King’s decision is not approved by all the senators, one of them being Balisarius, who does not wish to see the princess dismantle the war machine for which he has sacrificed much.

Balisarius had managed to make his adoptive daughter, Kora, the Princess’ bodyguard. With her help, he can now carry out the assassination.

Balisarius is not only a senator but also the King’s friend, but he has no qualms about betraying the King.

On the day of the coronation, Balisarius assassinates the King and the Queen with the other senators, while Kora kills Princess Issa on Balisarius’ orders.

Balisarius then betrays Kora. He, along with the other senators, blames the assassination on her, forcing her to flee and live the life of a fugitive.

Balisarius begins ruling, expanding, and slaughtering people across the universe in the King’s place, dashing all hopes of the age of peace.

However, in Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, General Titus tells Kora that Princess Issa is still alive, meaning that Balisarius was unsuccessful in killing the entire Royal Family.
