Athena: Them: The Scare character explained

In Them: The Scare, Athena is the mother of Dawn Reeve. Several of her secrets come out when Edmund starts haunting her family. Pam Grier plays Athena.

Athena works at a toy shop. When the ghost of Edmund starts haunting Dawn and her family, she is the one who slowly starts recognizing the spirit.

Events such as the appearance of the Raggedy Andy doll and some pills further push her suspicions. Eventually, the spirit forces Athena to reveal several secrets about Dawn’s childhood, which Dawn doesn’t see coming.

The adoptive mother

Dawn had been prescribed certain medications because her father had a heart condition. Athena lets Dawn know that she doesn’t have that condition because she is adopted.

Athena and her husband, William, who died when Dawn was very young, are not Dawn’s biological parents. However, that’s only half the truth.

Athena tells Dawn that she is adopted

Near the end of the second season, when the spirit of Edmund starts targeting Kel, Athena lets Dawn know that Edmund, her twin brother, is after them.

Dawn and Edmund were inseparable as kids, and Athena drew Dawn far away from her twin brother.

Athena and William had adopted both of them, but unlike Dawn, Edmund was difficult to deal with. He was stubborn and used to throw a lot of tantrums.

One day, Athena returned home to find her husband, William, dead, and Edmund playing with his father’s pills. It’s then that she decided to send Edmund back to the foster home she adopted him from.

To make Dawn forget about Edmund, Athena made her believe that Edmund was her imaginary friend.

Athena’s death

In the seventh episode, when Edmund contacts Athena and invites her to the shop she works at, she goes all alone, intending to confront him and stop him.

Edmund is seen despising Athena for sending him back to the foster home. Edmund believed that Athena sent him back, knowing that Bernice, his foster mother, hurts him.

Even though Athena says that she didn’t know this, she is killed by Edmund, who separates her head from her body.
