Quasi revolves around a satirical version of Quasimodo, the central character of Victor Hugo’s 1831 Novel. The film is now streaming on Hulu.
Story
Quasimodo, also known as Quasi, is a hunchback who serves as the torturer for the King of France, who has a strained relationship with the Pope.
The Queen, Katherine, is constantly neglected by the King. It is also well known that the King had murdered his previous wife.
Katherine witnesses Quasi displaying the qualities of a true leader and has a soft spot for him, but he has always thought of himself as lowly.
Quasi’s life is thrown upside down when both the King and the Pope task him with assassinating the other person or facing his own doom.
Will Quasi kill one of the two or manage to escape this dire situation?
Performances
The cast includes members of the Broken Lizard comedy group: Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske.
In a satire, they naturally feel comfortable with whatever they’re doing and are the saving grace of the film.
Positives
At some points, the film does manage to be funny. When it’s absolutely unhinged, Quasi can get you to laugh quite hard.
It does try to tackle a tough premise. The Medieval period is rarely attempted to show with humour. It’s mostly always portrayed in a grievous manner.
Negatives
The humorous moments are too few and far between, and most of them were in the trailer. Right from the start, it feels destined to be a forgetful film that won’t entertain enough.
Even among satires, Quasi never stands out. It parodies a time period few really understand or are even aware of. Many might not have read Victor Hugo’s book either.
It feels like a forced attempt to bring the Broken Lizard back and use their endearing fans to make the film succeed.
Verdict
If you will watch absolutely anything that the Broken Lizard are in, then Quasi might be enough for you. For everyone else, tread carefully.
