Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones review: Fascinating look into longevity

Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones is a four-episode docuseries following author Dan Buettner who travels to five places worldwide where people live unusually long lives.

Story

Buettner kicks off the Live to 100 journey from Okinawa, Japan, where the centenarians use Ikigai to live long and healthy lives.

The second episode sees Buettner go to two different Blue Zones — one in Sardinia and another in the suburb of Loma Linda. Both zones demonstrate many strikingly similar lifestyle choices that make long lifespans possible.

Buettner heads off to two other Blue Zones, one in the Greek Island of Ikaria and one in the Nicoya peninsula of Costa Rica. Buettner then visits Singapore before sharing his findings on how to create a new Blue Zone, from scratch.

Positives

Live to 100 offers a great look at the most conducive spots on Earth for a long life. Mortality is an inherently fascinating and vital topic, which makes contending with the existential inevitability therein that much more compelling.

Most people want to increase their lifespan, if not sustain it forever. The docuseries might entail the lessons for longer life that one may find familiar at first, but the data and the evidence solidify these tried and tested lifestyles.

A lingering effect of Life to 100 after it ends is to feel encouraged to try and bring these changes into one’s life to hopefully increase its span.

While the factors pertaining to a community of friends may be a bit out of one’s control, the series also delves into a range of lifestyle choices an individual can make by themselves.

Negatives

The cause behind there not being more Blue Zones in the world is something the docuseries only alludes to and addresses in insufficient doses.

A comprehensive commentary against the forces of capitalist institutions decreasing collective life expectancy would lend much insight to the documentary, and explain why most people across the globe can’t afford longevity even if it’s not always about the money.

Verdict

Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones is a warm and uplifting docuseries that falls short when it comes to showing the daunting task it is to expand the Blue Zones of long lifespans to whole countries.

However, it does spark a conversation that needs a big platform like Netflix to make policy changes necessary for vital longevity more mainstream among the general public.
