Coach Prime season 2 review: Good series that doesn’t set the world alight

In season 2 of Coach Prime, Deion Sanders takes over the University of Colorado Boulder football program to rejuvenate the failing team. The series is streaming on Prime Video.

Story

Deion Sanders is up for a new challenge, so he takes the helm of the University of Colorado and brings his baggage with him. He joins a team that was one of the worst performers in the 2022 season and aims to get them in top shape.

He brings in a winning mentality while embracing what makes Colorado the place it is. Top players are traded in as Coach Prime shows the country what he’s capable of with the right tools.

Different players from different backgrounds, personal struggles outside of the game, and opinions of everyone watching are all things that Deion has to navigate in this testing season.

Positives

Amazon Studios has settled on a format for their behind-the-scenes sports docuseries and it’s a formula that works. The talking heads, the dynamic gameday footage, and the focus on life outside the game are all balanced quite well.

Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders is an inspiring figure and that is quite evident in the words of the people around him. His personality is admirable and the connection he has with his players is captured wonderfully.

The production value is top notch and the direction is good. The series doesn’t fall into melodrama or attempt to manufacture emotions to heighten the stakes at any point.

Negatives

The college sports ecosystem and the importance of college football in America are not something that always capture the attention of outsiders. The sheer scale of it is unfathomable for any viewers unfamiliar with the country and its traditions.

Verdict

Coach Prime season 2 is an enjoyable experience because of the journey that Coach Deion Sanders has gone through with his team this season but there isn’t too much separating it from most other docuseries in the same genre. Fans of the personality can enjoy the look behind the curtain but there isn’t anything extraordinary about it.
