Carol & The End of The World review: A heartfelt and soothing story

Carol & The End of The World follows Carol, a timid, socially awkward woman who attempts to quietly live out the rest of her days in an impending apocalypse. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

A planet called Keppler 9C is hurtling towards Earth, giving humanity a little over eight months to live.

Carol Kohl is a quiet woman who doesn’t enjoy crowds or being perceived in a particular way so she finds it odd when everyone else lets go of their inhibitions.

Amid the chaos, she finds a place where people go to work to keep their minds off whatever is happening outside.

However, the longer she spends there, the more she opens up and has an impact on the people around her.

Positives

The animation is quite vivid and has an alluring quality to it. There is a youthful aura balanced with a more mature style.

The writing is incredibly profound and engaging. There are several monologues and every word has an arresting quality.

The voiceover work adds to the exceptional quality of the series. Martha Kelly’s performance in particular is brilliant.

Carol & The End of The World covers quite a few themes that are simple enough to understand and relatable as well.

Negatives

The pacing of the episodes can be a little lethargic at times. The penultimate episode stands out not just in the narrative but also due to its quality.

The significance of episode nine can be questioned entirely. It is based on a throwaway reference from earlier, but it is unclear whether it is fact or fiction.

Verdict

Carol & The End of The World is a wonderful animated series with many thought-provoking themes and some nice emotional moments. Martha Kelly’s voiceover work can be very calming to listen to and is one of the shining aspects of the series.
