The Mandalorian season 3 episode 5 recap & review: The Pirate

In episode 5 of The Mandalorian, Nevarro is under attack by Gorian Shard, and the Mandalorians along with Din Djarin attempt to rescue the city. The episode is streaming on Disney+.

Recap

Greef Karga is overseeing some city planning when he is interrupted by a commotion outside. He sees a corsair class ship flying overhead and is immediately hailed by Gorian Shard.

The pirate king tells Greef Karga that he’s taking the city for himself and it would be best if the people surrendered since they don’t have the capabilities to fight back.

Karga sends out a distress message asking for help from Captain Teva of the Adelphi squadron and then flees the city with the rest of the people.

Captain Teva heads to Coruscant to request backup and assistance to launch a counter-attack but he encounters Elia Kane who convinces Teva’s superiors that since Nevarro is not Republic recognized planet, they have no obligation to help.

Teva decides to go with plan b and visits the planet where the Mandalorians are holed up. He found their location with the help of R-5 and tells Din Djarin that Karga is in trouble and needs help.

Djarin pleads his case in front of the rest of the covert and Paz Vizsla speaks out in support of Djarin in favor of helping Nevarro. Together, they plan an offensive against Gorian Shard.

Djarin distracts the Shard’s ship and his snub fighters in the air with the N-1 while Bo-Katan drops off teams of Mandalorians to take back control of the city.

With the dual offensive, the Mandalorians eventually reclaim the city as Bo-Katan and Djarin take down Shard’s ship. Karga thanks them and offers them a parcel of land as a token of gratitude.

The Armorer calls Bo-Katan to have a conversation with her. She tells Bo that it is time the Mandalorians from all over unite once again and retake their home planet.

Since Bo has walked on both worlds of the Mandalorian divide and has seen a live mythosaur, the Armorer believes she is the perfect person to unite the people of Mandalore.

They inform the rest of the covert that Bo will be traveling the galaxy to reunite the other tribes so that they can be one yet again.

Captain Teva is patrolling a region of space when he finds the wreckage of a Lambda transport ship. Upon further inspection, he learns that it is the same ship that was transporting Moff Gideon and that Gideon was extracted from the ship.

The probe he sent out also scans a fragment of Beskar steel embedded in the wall of the ship, pointing to the fact that Mandalorians might be involved in the extraction.

Review

  • This episode contains a fair bit of action in the air and on the ground, the entire duration is backed by a wonderful score. The music in Star Wars is generally very good but this episode is scored exceptionally well.
  • The series is deliberately leaving crumbs pointing to the rise of the First Order and the entire conspiracy is layered in perfectly with the primary narrative.
  • The rebirth of Mandalore is another interesting arc that is being explored in the series and it has reached a critical point as Bo-Katan heads out to find other tribes and re-establish these once-great people to their former glory.
  • There are some irregularities with the VFX as Zeb Orrelios looks amazing but the animation of Gorian Shard doesn’t exactly match his voice and it looks quite pedestrian.
