Succession season 4 episode 9 recap & review: Church and State

In Succession season 4 episode 9, the Roys attend the funeral of their late patriarch before they all gear up to appease Mencken for their own ends.

The siblings, the family, politicians, friends, foes, and just about every moneychanger attends Logan Roy’s funeral. Disregarding the line-up, Ewan staggers onto the stage and gives his eulogy.

He delivers a painful speech that delves into Logan’s troubled childhood while also deriding the man he’d become and the awful things he’d do. Roman is up next and all the feelings flood his heart right then and there, rendering him speechless. He shortly breaks down in tears and his siblings rush to lend him tissues and shoulders.

In his place, Kendall takes to the podium and delivers a strong eulogy, followed by an emotional one by Shiv. However, the tears can’t flow for long enough to perturb the greedy course of things surrounding the Roys and their company.

Earlier in the episode, Shiv reveals to Kendall and Roman that she’s pregnant. She also asks Matsson to go ahead with the fake projections regarding the Indian subscriber count.

Later, she arranges a brief meeting between Matsson and Mencken where they pitch their idea, which includes giving the dead a green light if the CEO would be someone from America.

Shiv pushes for herself as the CEO and at the end of the episode, Matsson tells her that their pitch has been entertained and there are positive signs. Meanwhile, Kendall takes note and informs Roman that he’s failed to make Mencken a formidable solution to their quandary.

Roman takes off to let out all the steam inside him and throws himself in the midst of the protesters, getting hurt in the process.

  • Succession season 4 episode 9 is the penultimate installment of the series and keeps the cylinders firing throughout its entirety.
  • However, it also leaves much to be desired from Roman’s implosion, and while his breakdown at the funeral is impactful, it’s the kind of madness he showcases at the end of the episode that seems really exciting.
  • Kendall truly seems to be emulating his father’s conviction while having his own brand make a mark on others as he tries to collect a loyal posse, and if nothing too drastic hits his incline as the subversive turns of his arcs previously have, he’s pretty much locked in to be the true successor of Logan Roy.
