Velma: ‘Scooby-Doo’ spin-off to stream on HBO Max in 2023

HBO Max is set to release a ‘Scooby-Doo’ spin-off titled ‘Velma’ in 2023. It narrates the origin story of one of the core characters of the original franchise.

The official synopsis reads:

“VELMA is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

Unlike the original tone of Scooby-Doo shows, which is geared towards kids, ‘Velma’ has been created as a series targeting adult viewership.

In the teaser, Velma satirically questions HBO Max changing characters’ personalities, highlighting the character being reimagined as a South Asian. She confronts a serial killer right inside her house, with the clip hinting at a gory series.

Mindy Kaling (Velma), Glenn Howerton (Fred), Constance Wu (Daphne) and Sam Richardson (Shaggy) form the main voice cast.

The series has been co-created by Charlie Grandy and Kaling. The two are joined by Howard Klein and Sam Register as executive producers.
