Following the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Kane Chronicles is the next from Rick Riordan’s oeuvre to score an adaptation on Netflix. The author has been in talks with the streaming giant since last October regarding the development of the Egyptian mythology series into feature films.
On Saturday, Riordan took it to social media and his website to announce the news:
“Hey, guys! An exciting announcement as posted on social media concerning the Kane Chronicles: We are developing the series for feature films on Netflix! We have been working on this deal since last October, about the same time we started working on Percy, and I’m so glad I can now announce it! That’s all I can say for the moment, but stay tuned. I will try to answer some questions during the Tower of Nero tour events.”
The Kane Chronicles takes the readers across a new setting with a fresh set of characters. Borrowing extensively from Egyptian history and mythology the trilogy follows teen protagonists Carter and Sadie Kane, who are portrayed as the descendants of Egyptian pharaohs Narmer and Ramesses the Great.
Like the Percy Jackson series, The Kane Chronicles will feature mythological figures in a modern context with a few encounters with Percy himself, placing both series in the same universe. The Kane Chronicles trilogy includes The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow.
Back in May, Riordan had announced that the Percy Jackson series will be getting another shot at a live-action adaptation on Disney+. The author said in a statement:
“We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one.”
With two projects underway, this is going to be a big year for Riordan’s fans.
