Bollywood star Radhika Apte is all set to play the lead in Apple TV’s new series Shantaram. The series will be based on Gregory David Roberts’ novel with the same name.
Apte plays the role of an Indian journalist named Kavita alongside Charlie Hunnam. Hunnam will be playing the role of Lindsay Ford – an Australian heroine and addict and bank robber on the run who finds a new life in the slums of Mumbai.
The story revolves around the bars, slums and underworld of Mumbai. Moulin Rouge‘s Richard Roxburgh.
The book is said to be an adaptation of true events that occurred in the author’s life.
Roxburgh plays the role of Detective Sergeant Marty Nightingalem from the Australian Federal Police. As part of an elite task force, Roxburgh is responsible for the capturing escaped convicts.
The show has been written by American Hustle writer Eric Warren Singer.
Apte has gained immense popularity with her roles in Netflix’s web series like Sacred Games, Lust Stories and Ghoul.
Justin Kurzel of Assassin’s Creed fame will be directing the first two episodes of the series. The 10-episode series will begin production next month in Australia.
Initially the cast of Shantaram was all set to cast Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan alongside Pirates of the Caribbean lead Johnny Depp. The series was also supposed to be directed by Mira Nair at a point which was cancelled back in 2009 due to scheduling conflicts.
However, Hunnam and Apte have now been made regulars on the show.
The show will be co-produced Anonymous Content and Paramount Television.
Earlier this year, Apple TV also announced the arrival of The Morning Show starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell.
Apple TV has also announced See starring Jason Momoa who plays a blind warrior. The show is reportedly one of the most expensive productions in TV series.
Apple TV is all set to premiere worldwide on November 1, 2019.
