Synopsis

“During WWII, the allied forces prepare their invasion of Sicily, planning to strike its southern shore. When they learn that the Nazis are aware of their operation, two intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen), devise a plan to humiliate Hitler and deceive the Nazi forces by using a corpse carrying fake documents, suggesting that the ally forces’ real target is Greece.”

“With Spain not allowing German forces anywhere near the found corpse, Ewen and Charles must think on their toes in order to have a successful invasion and turn the tides of the war.”

Other details

It is based on the true story of a critical military deception operation, held in July 1943, to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. Ewen Montagu and Charles Cholmondeley, the brains behind Operation Mincemeat, obtained the body of a Welsh tramp in a London morgue, who died after consuming rat poison.

Their plan of action was to disguise the corpse in a British officer’s uniform, carrying fake documents, in order to mislead the Germans. The only complication then lay with the conjecture that the body’s autopsy could reveal that the ‘officer’ did not die of drowning.

Trailer

With the voiceover of Colin Firth, the compelling cinematography introduces the gravity of the situation, that is, the Nazis have figured out the British forces’ plan of striking Sicily’s southern shore.

Ewen Montagu (played by Colin Firth), the naval intelligence officer, then proceeds to declare that a plan of action is to be established in order to mislead Hitler.
