“When her mother Ana (Judy Greer) is hired as the costume designer on a movie, they relocate to L.A., where Stargirl quickly becomes involved with an eclectic assortment of characters. They include aspiring filmmaking brothers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Williams); Mr Mitchell (Judd Hirsch), one of Stargirl’s neighbours; and Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman), a musician Stargirl admires and encounters on her journey.”
The film’s prequel, Stargirl was based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Jerry Spinelli, who is also an executive producer for the films. The New York Times Bestseller has won a Parents Choice Gold Award, an ALA Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults Award, and a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year award.
Stargirl Caraway moves to California but craves a normal life without as much adventure. She impresses a young man, Evan who introduces himself as her neighbour. He offers her a role in a film that he’s creating with his brother, Tyrell.
Stargirl sails through her singing career with guidance from Roxanne Martel, a singer who vanished from the music industry after releasing one album.
