Dracula Sir: Hoichoi to stream tragic-mythic tale

The Bengali streaming platform Hoichoi has unveiled the trailer for its latest offering ‘Dracula Sir‘, a complex telling of the mythic creature within the Bengali context.

Led by Anirban Bhattacharya and Mimi Chakraborty, the film is helmed by Debaloy Bhattacharya and is a love story at heart. The film also stars Bidipta Chakraborty, Rudranil Ghosh, Samiul Alam, Kanchan Mullick, and Supriyo Dutta among others.

According to the official description provided by Hoichoi: “Witness the tale of a Bengali Dracula, out to create his own lore.”

The upcoming film narrates the story of a schoolmaster Raktim Chowdhury, who earns the sobriquet Dracula Sir for the unusual appearance of his teeth.

Almost everyone around him fears him due to his protruding canines, however, this peculiar physical feature also nails him at the receiving end of years of bullying and ridicule. Aside from that, his past comes to haunt him through the ghosts of Amol, who is a Maoist (Raktim from his previous life), and Manjari (Amol’s beloved).

Despite all this, Raktim wishes for is a peaceful life, but the past will not let it be. In this alternating fashion, the film offers a blended narrative constantly shifting between the Bengal of 70s and 2020 as Raktim’s and Amol’s narratives converge.

The trailer fleshes out the context with people from 70s marching to the chant “down with imperialism”, with scenes from the battlefront and torture rooms. While the first half of the trailer focuses on Amol, the second half features a vulnerable Raktim who after being haunted by ghosts from his past, begins questioning his own reality.

Dracula Sir made a theatrical debut on October 21 and has since received praises from critics and viewers alike. The OTT release is slated for December 11.
