A.R. Rahman’s ‘99 Songs’ to stream on Netflix and Jio Cinema

Netflix and Jio Cinema to digitally release A.R. Rahman’s musical drama ‘99 Songs’ on 21 May. The movie will be available in three languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

99 Songs follows the journey of a budding talent Jay, whose life revolves around the art of music and his girlfriend Sophie. He is soon faced with the challenge to compose a song that holds the power to change the world.

The movie is directed by debutant filmmaker Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, starring newcomers Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas. This movie marks Rahman’s first venture as a writer and producer.

Talking about composing music for the movie, Rahman said in an interview: “It’s a big roller-coaster ride. A musician, who is fresh, has certain sensibilities. Then he becomes evolved, and he has different sensibilities. Then he goes into a Zen mode. In the film, according to the evolution of the character, the music changes. From simplistic to simple to complex to back to simple, so that’s the arc of the music.”

99 Songs had its world premiere at the 24th Busan Film Festival in 2019. The movie also had its theatrical release on 16 April, but its run was cut short due to the global pandemic.
