All the Old Knives is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Olen Steinhauer, the screenwriter, originally published in 2015.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Newton revealed that to prepare for their role, the cast was allowed to speak to real representatives from the CIA and even had a former CIA operative as a consultant who advised them throughout the movie.
When asked to describe the movie, Pine responded: “It’s everything that I love about filmmaking… why I wanted to be a filmmaker. It reminds me of Jane Fonda and Redford making a film in the 70s. It’s got the sexiness of Klute. It’s got the turtlenecks of 3 Days of the Condor. It’s got something for everyone and really at the heart of it, it is a romance.”
