Tobert is a documentarian who was making a film on Ben Glenroy’s debut on Broadway but with Ben’s death, his film is done for. However, he appears to be in search of a different story now. The character is portrayed by Jesse Williams.
Tobert shows up with his camera rig right behind Ben Glenroy on the day of the first read-through. He is introduced by Ben and then explains that his name is quite literally “Robert with a T”.
He then assures them that he’s just there to observe and that they would not be hearing from him after that moment. That statement remains true with Tobert showing up on screen once again only after Ben’s death.
A treasure trove of footage
Mabel meets Tobert when they are both headed to Ben’s apartment. Mabel makes up an excuse to be looking around in Ben’s apartment while Tobert says that he has to look for a boom mic that he left behind.
They soon realize that both of them are lying and Tobert comes clean about what he’s searching for. He relates a story about his time in Botswana observing a herd of elephants and also reveals that he found the camera that he had with him on opening night.
Ben had grabbed it from Tobert and stormed into his dressing room while it was still recording. Mabel asks to see it but Tobert refuses to give it to her so she swipes it from him.
She found him the next day after he had mentioned one of his favorite places to eat because the camera footage also had a password. He agrees to view it with her and help solve Ben’s murder.
