Plot summary

In a dystopian future, Isaac James, also known as Izi, is living at the Kitchen, a social housing community where people take care of each other.

The government is shutting places like these down, but the community of the Kitchen is not ready to give in just like that.

Izi doesn’t care about the struggles of the Kitchen. He just wants to leave the place and move to a better one.

Izi has plans to move into a single-occupancy Buena Vida flat on the other side of the town. However, he is going to have to wait for it.

Izi works at Life After Life, a funeral home. On one fine day, he learns about the funeral of Toni Clarke, with whom he shares a past.

Izi attends the funeral, where he sees that she has a son named Benji, who notices Izi. After the funeral, Benji meets Izi and questions whether he knows his mother.

Benji attempts to get along with Izi, who keeps pushing him away. Izi eventually gives him a ride on his bike.

After learning that Izi is from the Kitchen, Benji claims that his mother mentioned that his father lives there. Izi has no answer for that.

Benji and Izi part ways. A lonely Benji opens the gift his mother has left for him, which is a bike.

On that bike, he goes looking for Izi and instead finds a group from the Kitchen, led by a man named Staples.

Benji hangs out with Staples and his group. They often play around, damaging the properties of the government.

Izi and Benji eventually cross paths with each other again. A raid forces Izi to take Benji into his apartment.

After being told that he is not meant to hang out with the likes of Staples, Benji requests Izi to let him stay with him for two nights.

Izi tells Benji that he is moving out himself, but he lets Benji hang out with him for a while before abandoning him again.

At a time like this, Staples once again takes Benji in and gets him involved in the activities of his group, which Benji enjoys for a while before being found by Izi again.

A worried Izi warns Benji about Staples. More importantly, this time Izi takes Benji in for real and hangs out with him like his real friend.

Izi develops a bond with him to the point where he thinks of turning his single-occupancy apartment into a double-occupancy.

Ending explained:

Izi leaves Benji yet again

Benji knows that Izi is moving to Buena Vida. He claims that though he can’t pay the rent, he can help him with other things.

Benji also lets Izi know everything his mother has told him about him. Izi feels pressured to take Benji in again, which leads to him abandoning Benji again.

While Izi moves into his Buena Vida apartment, Benji is left alone at Izi’s apartment at the Kitchen.

Izi’s return

Benji is at the Kitchen when a successful raid by the government takes the life of Lord Kitchener, who runs the Kitchen’s radio station.

Benji ends up joining Staples, and as revenge, Staples and his group decide to hurt the common people outside the Kitchen. Benji is not able to see the violence inflicted on others by Staples’ group.

Like Izi had claimed, Benji is not built for stuff like this. Benji ends up running away from the scene.

Meanwhile, Izi witnesses the funeral of Lord Kitchener at his funeral home. The attachment the people of Kitchen share with Lord Kitchener makes Izi emotional.

Izi did create something with Benji. Since moving into his new apartment, Izi has only felt empty. Hence, he finds Benji and makes things right with him by bringing his mother’s tree.

Izi and Benji’s new relationship

Izi and Benji plant Benji’s mother’s plant at the Kitchen before another police raid begins. This time around, Staples and his group fight back, causing a war at the Kitchen.

Benji is attacked before being saved by Izi. The two manage to find their way into their apartment.

As they see the war unfolding, Benji asks Izi whether he is his father. Izi nods and asks whether he wants him to be his father.

Benji says they will see how everything will work. Izi agrees. The two hear someone banging at the door.

The film ends once the sound of the door breaking down is heard, keeping the fate of the two characters a secret.
