The spiral sign in True Detective: Night Country explained

In True Detective: Night Country, a spiral sign keeps appearing on crime scenes of the case that Liz and Navarro are investigating.

Rose Aguineau, a resident of Ennis who discovers the bodies of Tsalal men, instructs Navarro to investigate the spiral sign that was on the head of one of the Tsalal men.

Rose claims that the sign is ancient; it’s older than Ennis and probably older than the ice.

Raymond Clark, one of the Tsalal scientists, had the spiral sign tattooed on his chest. He received that tattoo only after seeing Annie’s tattoo of the same sign.

Annie’s friend, Susan, reveals that Annie saw the sign in her dreams a bunch of times. When she got the tattoo, the dreams stopped.

The spiral sign keeps appearing during the investigation of the Tsalal men and Annie’s cases.

It is seen in places like Clark’s trailer and Oliver Tagaq’s cabin. However, no one is able to tell the real meaning of the sign until Qavvik brings someone who does know what it is.

The true meaning of the spiral sign

In the fifth episode of True Detective: Night Country, Qavvik comes with a man named Kenny, who has some information on the spiral sign.

Kenny claims that his grandfather used to tell him to walk away from those spiral signs. The spiral signs are left as a warning for hunters.

The warnings are for places where the ice would swallow everyone. Navarro takes the hint and concludes that Kenny is talking about underground ice caves.

As kids, Kenny and his friends would crack the ice on purpose to enter these ice caves. Kenny’s grandmother used to get pissed and say that the Night Country is going to take them.

Earlier, Otis Heiss claimed that Raymond Clark is hiding in the Night Country.

Entering the Night Country

With the information provided by Kenny, Navarro figures out how to enter these caves. She believes all they need to do is find the highest point on the cave maps.

They have to find the place closest to the surface and crack in. Otis can point out this place for them, and they can enter the underground cave system.

In the final moments of the fifth episode, while Peter takes care of his father’s body, Navarro and Liz leave to enter the Night Country.
