Why were the Special Investigators dismissed in Reacher season 2?

Reacher assembled the Special Investigators or the 110 MP Special Investigations Unit during his time in the army.

Reacher was tasked with setting up a team that would investigate crimes within the army and would be facing unpredictable danger.

He gathers a group with varied skills and forms the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit.

Reacher gets them into a barfight as a bonding exercise, and from that moment he is certain that this team would have each other’s backs.

In their final case, Karla Dixon notices something strange in the fuel records for planes traveling overseas and returning to the country.

She brings it up to Reacher and together they figure that the fuel numbers are accounting for smuggling operations.

Doing the right thing

The team investigates the matter further and finds out that someone in the army is smuggling drugs into the country on trucks and selling it locally.

They manage to track down low-level dealers and Swan even takes a bullet for Reacher during one of their undercover missions.

The special investigators are ordered to shut down the case

However, just before one of their biggest busts in the case, they are asked to stand down for political reasons.

The colonel is getting a promotion and if a major drug smuggling scandal right under his nose were publicized, then he would lose the promotion.

Despite being ordered to stand down, Reacher convinces his team to go after the corrupt soldiers and successfully bust down the operation.

They are dismissed for disobeying a direct order and warned that they will face repercussions for their indiscipline.
