Plot summary

Ally heads a reality show called Dessert Island, which is known more for the flings between contestants than the desserts made on the show.

After season 3 ends, Ally is informed that the show is set to be cancelled. She decides to take a trip back home to Leavenworth and meet her mother.

While there, she runs into her ex-boyfriend, Sean, whom she broke up with to leave and become a filmmaker. The two relive their time together 10 years ago and have an adventurous night, which culminates in Ally kissing him.

However, he seems hesitant to take things forward. Ally, who believes that this he chance to reunite with Sean, keeps pursuing him.

At his house, she meets his family again, with whom she shares a strong bond. During a conversation, it is revealed that Sean is actually set to get married to Cassidy.

Benny, a mutual friend of Sean and Ally, tells her that the moment he came to know that she was in town, he went to meet her. It wasn’t an accident.

But he still urges her to leave and not ruin Sean and Cassidy’s wedding. Ally doesn’t pay heed to this and takes up Sean’s mother’s offer to shoot their wedding with the intention to win him back.

Cassidy is immediately wary of Ally. She knows about her and Sean’s past and tries her best to make sure the two keep their distance.

After a concert by Cassidy and her friends’ band, she reveals to Ally that she honestly wants to tour with her friends, but decided to let it go to settle down with Sean.

Sensing an opportunity, Ally starts encouraging her to follow her dreams, hoping that she will leave Sean just like she did in the past.

Cassidy and Ally start bonding as well. The latter realises that the two have a lot in common and she actually reminds her of herself. They share their rebellious nature and a lot of interests, including nudism.

Cassidy also discloses to her that she and Sean decided to get married because they thought she was pregnant. Even when they realised she wasn’t they chose not to talk about whether to go ahead with the marriage.

Somebody I Used To Know ending explained in detail:

Who tells Cassidy’s parents about the wedding?

Ally begins the individual interviews for the wedding video. When talking to Sean, the two clearly feel a spark between them.

Ally uses her interviewing skills to get him to open up. She repeatedly asks him what he loves about Cassidy and adds that she is similar to her in the past.

Sean indirectly says that he loves Cassidy because she reminds him of Ally’s past self. He states all the qualities that he loved about Ally and now sees them in Cassidy.

The interview is cut short by the arrival of Cassidy’s parents, whom she hadn’t called to the wedding due to their strained relationship and had told Sean they couldn’t make it.

Cassidy is furious when she finds out that her parents were invited. She assumes that Sean invited them, but it was actually Ally, who knew this would cause a rift between the couple.

Do Sean and Cassidy reconcile?

Cassidy angrily breaks up with Sean, who now thinks he and Ally can be together. But he is insulting about her choice to choose her career in the past.

Ally tells him that she does not regret her decision and Dessert Island has been picked up for a season 4 by a streaming service.

Sean is hurt and blames Ally for leaving him again, but she feels that he’s being selfish. Even with Cassidy, he easily decided that they would live their lives exactly how he wanted and not let her tour.

Ally storms out and talks to Cassidy. The latter knows that Ally only came to steal Sean back, to which she agrees.

But she also tells her that she deserves to be with someone who respects what she wants and the two share a moment.

Sean returns and apologises to Cassidy. He tells her that she can go on tour and that he has realised how restrictive he has been. The two get back together and go ahead with the marriage.

Cassidy finds out that Ally called her parents, but as angry as she is, she cannot help herself from thanking Ally for the kind words of encouragement.

Does Ally move on from Sean?

Ally finally accepts that she shouldn’t come between the two and that Sean was never really the one for her. Her mother also reaffirms this. When she sees a video of Sean and Cassidy’s wedding day, she gives a smile. This shows that Ally has finally moved on.

Her chase of Sean was only because of the direction her career was going in. She was questioning if she really was whom she had always wanted to be.

She realises that her decisions were the correct ones for her. She assigns Dessert Island season 4 to her former colleague Kayla.

Instead, she is now pursuing interesting documentaries. She is shown to be interviewing a nudist who has accepted her true self.

This draws a lot of parallels with Ally herself. She was finally able to stop pretending who she is and accept herself. In the end, she is shown to be happier than ever and might even have found someone new in her co-worker, Christian.

A mid-credits scene also shows Kayla heading the dessert show that was suggested to Ally in the past called ‘The Dess-hurt Locker’.
