Priya: Dhootha character explained

Priya is the protagonist Sagar Varma’s pregnant wife — one of the major supporting characters in Prime Video’s paranormal thriller series, Dhootha. The character is played by Priya Bhavani Shankar.

Samachar’s Editor-in-chief, Sagar Varma has seen exemplary success as a journalist. He’s not only won accolades and people’s reverence but also built a great family for himself.

He has a daughter with his wife Priya, with another baby on the way. A seemingly perfect person, Sagar has built his empire with the foundation of lies, corruption, and propaganda.

His time comes as a paranormal entity begins haunting him, getting him to finally realize that to save his family, he might as well have to perish.

However, soon enough, he learns that the solution to this haunting also has much to do with Priya, who indulges in dark deeds herself.

The picture-perfect life

Priya is a mother to a little girl with another baby on the way. A journalist by profession, like her husband Sagar, Priya is enjoying the maternity leave at the beginning of the show.

Her husband is the new Editor-in-chief of Samachar and a very accomplished journalist. They are loaded too, and have a lavish house for themselves.

Priya is a big-time journalist herself and has enough clout to get in contact with the managing directors of news channels and get them not to broadcast a particular news story.

The illusion shatters

One day, Priya’s maid receives a mail package and inside she finds something that terrifies her out of her mind. Priya sees the contents inside soon and is horrified at the sight herself.

It is a dead fetus, that came about as a result of Sagar and Amrutha’s sexual affair. Amrutha mailed it to her after getting dumped by Sagar during the hardest moment of her life.

Priya splits up with Sagar after confronting him about the truth and seeing guilt written all over his face. She then goes to live with her father as Sagar continues to be haunted by the supernatural entity.

Priya’s karma comes knocking

Sagar’s corrupt and immoral deeds have been coming to bite him, thanks to a ghost who hunts down corrupt journalists like him. The ghost goes after the journalists’ families and loved ones.

It’s only after the corrupt journalist kills himself that the ghost stops going after their family members. Sagar’s daughter Anjali dies because of his sins. To ensure his wife and unborn baby survive, he tries killing himself.

However, he vomits out all the sleeping pills he ingested to kill himself when he learns of a crucial part of his wife’s character. She’s like him, rotten and corrupted.

Her friend Ashwin intentionally caused a fire at his hospital to collect insurance money, so that he could pay off his loan debts. The fire kills five kids in the children’s ward. He turns to Priya for help.

She extends a helping hand and uses her connections to have the news channel MDs prevent the coverage of this news. She’s a corrupt journalist herself and even if Sagar dies, her own deeds will lead to her and her unborn baby’s death.

Tapas eventually catches up to her but she’s ultimately saved, and so is her unborn baby, by Sagar’s actions, which are to confess his sins in the public, kill the politician he’d been working with, and in turn inspire one journalist to never sell out their values and principles like he did.

Her baby is born eventually and she takes the baby to visit Sagar in prison at the end of Dhootha.
