James Thacker: Sweet Tooth character explained

James Thacker is an explorer responsible for unleashing the Sick and the hybrids onto the world. Joel Tobeck plays the character.

Birdie has been reading James Thacker’s journal to find out where she might find a cure for the Sick.

According to his notes, he found a cave somewhere in Alaska, and whatever he did inside originally let out the Sick and caused the hybrids to be born.

It was preserved in the ice before Birdie and the other scientists at Fort Smith discovered microbes that led to Gus’ birth and the Great Crumble.

Dr. Singh becomes obsessed with Thacker’s research and believes it is his destiny to stop the Sick.

A grave mistake

James Thacker traveled to Alaska to find the cure of all cures and he comes across the cave where it all began.

His crew comes down with the Sick and confront him about what he unleashed but his insists that his journey was worth it.

He returns with a vial that he labels “the blood of the Earth” and believes that it holds the ultimate cure to all diseases.

However, his crew rightly believes that they cannot let whatever they have get back to the mainland and they all kill themselves.

Thacker kills his first mate and hopes to escape, but he also has the sick and succumbs to it as the violet flower bursts from his chest.

When Gus eventually goes inside the cave, he finds a giant antler in the form of a tree with an axe embedded in it.

Thacker chopped the tree to get the blood of the Earth and let the sap flow down into the ground where it imbued itself.

His notes included a statement that everything was clear after he sacrificed the deer, and there is a deer corpse outside the cave.

Dr. Singh believed that sacrificing Gus would reverse whatever Thacker unleashed but he wasn’t able to prove that theory.
