Plot summary

A Santa showed up at Gianna’s door on Christmas Eve a year ago. Santa had a message for her, written on cue cards. The cards read that she is perfect the way she is, she deserves happiness, and she is the queen of Christmas for the person who has sent this Santa.

Gianna recognizes this gesture from Love Actually and when Umberto drops by later and makes a Love Actually reference, Gianna assumes that he must have sent the Santa.

Now, the two have been dating for a year. Gianna has come to learn that Christmas dinners have the power to fix everything. Gianna is looking forward to this year’s Christmas dinner, but things are not turning out in her favor.

Last year, everyone at the table wanted her to find someone, get married, and settle down. Today, everyone is reminding her how difficult relationships and marriage can be.

At a family gathering, Gianna comes out of the house for fresh air, out of nervousness, and finds the Santa from last year. He explains to her that Christmas doesn’t hate her; it just wants her to be happy.

A lost Gianna ends up kissing Santa. Umberto watches all of this and leaves immediately. At a time like this, Didi and Margherita show up to comfort Gianna.

Gianna plans to fix everything again with Christmas dinner. Her parents won’t be hosting a Christmas dinner this year because they are separating, but she will host one of hers. Everyone is invited. She will try to invite Umberto too and make things right with him.

Just to get Umberto’s attention, Gianna goes to lengths. She even opts to work double shifts. She eventually learns that Umberto has moved on, and she needs to move on too.

Amidst all of this, Gianna, Didi, and Margherita make a new friend in the form of Filippo, who is Gianna’s new neighbor. Filippo lives with his daughter, Monica. His wife has passed away.

Filippo and Monica have taken over Caterina’s bar, and it has become Gianna and her friends’ go-to place for hanging out. At first, Gianna assumed that Filippo is a pedophile who has moved in with his 15-year-old girlfriend.

After learning the truth and getting to know Filippo, she finds out how genuine he is. He is there for her even at 3 a.m. when she needs someone to calm herself down.

Didi has broken up with Mario, and Margherita is going through a divorce. While Didi finds herself dating Alessandro, an old friend of hers, Margherita and her husband Guido will give one last chance to their marriage after trying a round of couples therapy. Guido asked for it.

Didi also develops a close relationship with Filippo’s daughter, Monica, who admires Didi’s style and seeks to be like her. Lastly, Gianna’s father, Pietro, falls for a matron at the hospital where Gianna works.

Gianna gets back into the world of dating after losing Umberto. She also convinces Filippo to go on a date with a girl, even though he doesn’t plan to find someone until Monica goes to university.

Gianna keeps crossing paths with Umberto and even Davide, the young boy she dated, who is at the hospital looking after his friend.

She soon finds the right date, who is none of the above, but fails to click with him. She is told that she can’t move on just for the sake of it; she needs to be heading somewhere. Filippo’s date, on the other hand, turns out to be a thief who tries to rob him.

A mad Filippo pours out his frustrations on Gianna for acting like a teenager and tells her what true love feels like by describing his first date, on which, he claims, he saw Santa Claus’ sleigh.

Filippo’s reaction upsets Gianna. At the same time, she starts wondering whether she has ever fallen in love or not. She hears from Umberto that she never let him into her life completely. According to Umberto, that is not love.

Gianna’s friends agree. Being in love means letting the other person know what you like or not and doing things like calling them at 3 a.m. because you are going crazy.

Gianna plans to let Umberto into her life by inviting him to a party organized by Alessandro. However, at the party, Gianna reconciles and connects with Filippo more before Umberto walks in and takes her away.

I Hate Christmas season 2 ending explained in detail:

Why does Gianna leave Umberto?

As Christmas draws closer, Gianna slowly learns what love really means. Love leads a patient of hers, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, to his first love.

Looking at examples like these makes Gianna think that love is truly a miracle, and if one asks themselves whether they are in love or not, it is not really love.

Gianna is asking herself the same about Umberto, who takes the hint that Gianna is not in love with him. He leaves and hopes to never see Gianna again.

Who sent Santa for Gianna a year ago?

Gianna finds out from Umberto that he is not the one who sent Santa with the cue cards last year. She had tried to investigate who sent the Santa.

After parting ways with Umberto, Gianna comes back home to find the Christmas dinner ready, with her whole family waiting for her. She figures out that Filippo has prepared everything. The Santa with the cue cards shows up at her door again.

This time around, Santa is here to reveal who sent him. It’s Davide. Throughout the show, Davide tries to tell Gianna something. He eventually did get a chance to confess that he started working for an NGO because of her.

Davide saw how Gianna took care of people day after day; he wanted the same for Gianna. Hence, he sent those cue cards to cheer her up a year ago.

How does Christmas end for Gianna and her friends?

Gianna follows what Davide has said and figures out that she is in love with Filippo. He is the person who she called at 3 in the morning when she was going crazy. Gianna finds Filippo and confesses her love to him, and he accepts it. The two kiss and start dating.

Gianna also helped Didi and Margherita with their love lives. Margherita had come to realize that she is still in love with Guido, but Guido had left her.

Without telling Margherita, Gianna sent Guido Margherita’s book from couples therapy that mentions all the things she misses about him. Guido returns, and the couple agrees to give their love another chance, as they both miss each other.

Didi hangs out with Monica, who tells Didi that she dresses up and pretends to be someone else so that men can like her. When Gianna hears from Monica that Alessandro used to make a fool out of Didi for singing in a choir, she makes Didi choose between Alessandro and Monica.

Didi can either go to the Maldives with Alessandro or join Monica, who has saved a place for Didi next to her for the concert before the mass. In the end, Didi chooses to be by Monica’s side, who admires Didi for who she is, although she explains that she is here because airports are closed.

Lastly, Gianna’s parents get back together. They missed each other and needed to break things to fix them. Now they have decided to try couples therapy too.
