Bobby Glass: The Gentlemen character explained

Bobby Glass is one of the major supporting characters in The Gentlemen (2024). The character is played by Ray Winstone.

The Glass family’s empire has about a 30% share in the UK’s weed market. His criminal organization runs on its many cannabis farms that operate out of the estates owned by the aristocrats.

After the death of one such aristocrat, the Twelfth Duke of Halstead, his second son inherits the estate and upon learning of his criminal associates, promptly wants them out of his property.

A lair in Leyhill

Eddie Horniman strikes the deal directly with Bobby Glass, who currently pulls the strings and takes the biggest decisions regarding the business at leisure while being incarcerated in the Leyhill Prison.

The Glass family patriarch has a lot of pull, both in the world of crime as well as in politics and aristocracy, which explains why he has an open-air, lavish lifestyle while being a prisoner.

The come-up & growing complacent

As for the business, it was in the 70’s when he started selling puff, and gradually made himself a whole empire, feared and respected by many in the criminal underworld.

However, as soon as the golden goose of his cannabis empire began laying golden eggs at a steady rate, he got too comfortable and reluctant to entertain any changes.

His daughter, Susie Glass, runs the business and has been trying to prove she can handle things on her own.

He loves her but doesn’t fully trust her to do things on her own just yet.

She has tried to change and take things to the next level, but he’s always denied her those liberties.

Retirement’s out of question

In the finale, he tells Susie and Eddie that he’s selling his empire.

After mulling it over and roping in big players of the UK underworld to compete and make the highest bid, they decide to buy Bobby’s business themselves.

To do so, they join hands and eliminate competition through deceit and dangerous, clever plays, painting the streets red in the process.

They present their bid to Bobby, who reveals to them that he just wanted them to show that they can show some skin in the game.

Bobby wanted Susie and Eddie to wake up and take the helm of things, and invest in the business, rather than buy it.

He also reveals that he never wanted to retire and now the three of them are the top dogs of the Glass empire, which now is on its way to expanding in a big way.
