In 3 Body Problem, Augustina Salazar, also known as Auggie, is one of the Oxford Five, who is a nanotech trailblazer. Eiza González plays Auggie.
Augustina Salazar, also known as Auggie, works as the Chief Scientific Officer at her company, the Nanotechnology Research Center.
In the series, she develops the world’s finest nanofiber, 3,000 times finer than human hair, which is very strong and as thin as air.
The countdown
Auggie is one of the scientists who sees the visions of a countdown. Tatiana Haas, one of the worshipers of San-Ti, meets Auggie and advises her to shut down her project if she wants to stop seeing the countdown.
Tatiana proves that she is not joking by telling Auggie to look up in the sky at midnight the next day. The universe is going to blink at her. It does, and in Morse code, it reads Auggie’s countdown.
In an attempt to protect herself, Auggie shuts down her lab and stops further development of the nanofiber she has created, disappointing her colleagues in turn.
However, when San-Ti learn that humans lie, and so has Mike Evans, who has been helping them, they break all ties they have with their followers.
Hence, when Clarence asks Auggie to resume her work, she stops seeing the countdown.
Auggie’s fate at the end of season 1
In the series, Auggie’s technology becomes crucial for Wade and his organization. It is used to take down everyone on Judgement Day.
However, Auggie doesn’t like working for Wade, who is emotionally detached and is ready to make sacrifices. Auggie carries guilt for the deaths of kids on Judgment Day. Her technology caused their deaths.
Later, upon Will’s assurance that Jin won’t do anything if it isn’t right, Auggie joins Wade’s team again to assist them in building a nanosail for the Staircase Project.
In the end, going against the people in her company, Auggie leaks all her work online so that it can help the people who need it.
She spends time in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, using her technology to help people get fresh water.
