Plot summary:

Jan Pavel Adamczewski is a nobleman who owns part of the village of Adamczycha. He has a wife named Zofia, two sons, Stanislaw and Jakub, and a daughter named Aniela.

Zofia is a stern, God-fearing woman who doesn’t hold her husband in very high esteem. Stanislaw is the heir to all of Jan Pavel’s land but he is an oaf who prefers the arts.

Jakub is a man of the cloth and a schemer who uses religion to swindle the peasants of the village constantly.

Aniela is a smart, well-educated young woman who prefers to stand up for social causes such as feminism and climate change.

The other half of Adamczycha is owned by Andrzej, and it is the bigger half of the village. Andrzej arrived there and took advantage of Jan Pavel’s incompetence when he bought his half.

Jan Pavel treats his villagers very poorly while Andrzej is a smart governor of people which makes him quite prosperous.

Maciej is a Lithuanian peasant who has come to the village on an exchange program and is working as the blacksmith’s helper.

He immediately strikes a chord with Aniela and the two of them often cross paths and spend time together in the village.

Zofia’s brother Bogdan is a landless noble after facing defeat in several wars. He wanders into the village and is welcomed in by his brother-in-law.

When Stanislaw returns home with news that he has married a city girl, Jan Pavel and his family have to welcome a city merchant named Cieszlaw and his wife Roazalia.

Rozalia’s emergence in Zofia’s life gives rise to emotions that Zofia has never felt before. Jan Pavel is stubborn and picks a fight with Cieszlaw over a silly detail and breaks the engagement.

Stanislaw runs away but Zofia begins an affair with Rozalia after giving in to her desires. Jakub sees this opportunity to become the sole heir of his family’s fortunes.

He notices that Aniela and Maciej are close and aims to push their relationship forward so that Aniela is shunned for courting a peasant.

However, he only succeeds in driving a wedge between them and ruining his own plans. A theater troupe cruises into town and Maciej is won over by their lifestyle.

He considers his life in Adamczycha over since he is no longer talking to Aniela and thinks about joining the troupe. He overhears Aniela talk about her feelings for him and changes his mind.

Aniela suspects her mother of having an affair but completely misses the signs when she investigates. When a magnate’s son finds himself in Adamczycha, Jan Pavel and Andrzej fight for his patronage.

They all go out on a hunt but Jan Pavel and Andrzej end up shooting the nobleman in the head. They cover up his death and come up with a story to explain the disappearance.

1670 ending explained in detail:

Becoming whole again

The alderman’s son is getting married and the entire is celebrating the occasion. Cieszlaw and Rozalia are attending and Jan Pavel isn’t happy.

After failing to strike a deal with Jan Pavel, Cieszlaw went into business with Andrzej and made him quite rich.

However, the King enacted a rule disqualifying nobleman from doing business with the bourgeoise and Andrzej’s lands are confiscated.

He begs Jan Pavel to buy back his share so that he can pay off his debt, and Jan Pavel is thrilled to be the owner of Adamczycha once again.

Finding out who is responsible

A priest called the Viper shows up under orders from the Crown to find the missing nobleman. Andrzej, Bogdan, Jan Pavel, and Jakub attempt to wayleigh his efforts.

The Viper goes around town following clues and soon figures out that the nobles are hiding something. Zofia and Rozalia end their tryst after Rozalia asks Zofia to confess.

Andrzej and Jan Pavel blame each other and when the Viper gives them an ultimatum, they throw Bogdan under the bus to take the fall.

The Viper then tells Bogdan that he must collect a reward because the dead nobleman was wanted dead or alive for murder.

A forbidden love

With everyone busy handling their own things during the wedding, Aniela is left all alone and Maciej decides to join her.

The two of them enjoy drinks together and share their feelings with each other before eventually sharing a kiss.

Aniela wakes up the next day contemplating how she has fallen in love with a peasant and how she will navigate this difficult situation.
