Yeh Ballet (Netflix India): A tale of breaking barriers

Netflix’s new original is all about breaking shackles. The streaming website recently released a trailer for its upcoming production Yeh Ballet.

Inspired by “real-life events” of two Mumbai teens, the movie will feature newcomers Manish Chauhan and Achintya Bose in the lead roles.

Chauhan, who is also one of the two influences behind Yeh Ballet, will play the role of Nishu, the winner of a dance competition. Bose, on the other hand, will play “competitor-turned-friend” Asif.

British actor Julian Sands, as a ballet teacher, and Jim Sarbh will also be seen in pivotal roles.

This coming-of-age story will have the two teens break barriers imposed on them by society to realise their dreams. The audience will get to see their extraordinary journey: from the streets of Mumbai to the dazzling world of ballet.

Director Sooni Taraporevala, in an interview, had this to say about the inspiration behind the movie: “Out of various possible subjects, I chose this one since I learnt ballet in my youth. I felt connected to their story and instantly wanted to share it with the world. A film like Yeh Ballet on a global service like Netflix will hopefully pique curiosity about the angelic mystique of ballet, but also demonstrate how dreams, no matter how outrageous, can be realised.”

Considering the subject of Yeh Ballet, Netflix is perhaps the appropriate platform for its release.

Amit Trivedi has composed the music for the film while Shiamak Davar, Cindy Claes, and Vitthal Patil choreographed the dance routines.

Yeh Ballet will release on Netflix on 21 February 2020.
