Under the Banner of Heaven is an upcoming true crime mini-series based on Jon Krakauer’s novel of the same name. It stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon detective in charge of a murder case in his community.

Release date

The limited series will release on Disney+ for the international audience, and on Hulu and FX for American viewers. The first episode will premiere on 28 April 2022.

Synopsis

“As Mormon Detective Jeb Pyre investigates the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter in a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley, he uncovers buried truths about the origins of the LDS religion and the violent consequences of unyielding faith.”

The title is drawn from an 1880 address by John Taylor, the third president of the LDS Church, defending the practice of plural marriage:

“God is greater than the United States, and when the Government conflicts with heaven, we will be ranged under the banner of heaven against the Government.”

Jeb Pyre is a devout detective, whose faith is tested when he investigates a brutal murder connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
