Netflix has released the trailer for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. The film will be Chadwick Boseman’s final performance as an actor, owing to his death earlier this year due to colon cancer.
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize winner, August Wilson’s play of the same name .
Set in 1927 Chicago, the plot revolves around the “Mother of the Blues”, Ma Rainey (Davis) and her horn player (Boseman) who are at loggerheads, due to creative differences, during a recording session.
It also touches upon the involvement of the “White” management of the group who want to control Ma Rainey’s legacy and cement a fortune for themselves.
The official logline reads:
“Tensions rise when the trailblazing Mother of the Blues and her band gather at a Chicago recording studio in 1927.”
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has been directed by George C. Wolfe and also stars Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige.
It will premiere on Netflix exclusively on December 18.
