The significance of Darksaber from The Mandalorian season 3 explained

When Din Djarin visits Bo-Katan, she says that her people refused to follow her because she didn’t possess the Darksaber. That weapon is greatly significant in the history of the Mandalorians and has a storied past.

The Darksaber was first seen in The Mandalorian wielded by Grand Moff Gideon before he was bested by Din Djarin, giving the Mandalorian the right to keep the sacred weapon.

Bo-Katan claims that she needs the weapon to unite her people but by tradition, it can only be won by combat. Djarin refuses to fight her for it and instead just offers it to her but she refuses.

The passing of the blade

The Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi Order. Following his passing, it was stored in the Jedi Temple before being stolen by members of House Vizsla during the fall of the Old Republic.

It was passed down to the generations of House Vizsla and was in possession of Pre Vizsla, leader of Death Watch. After taking control of Mandalore, Pre Vizsla was killed and the lightsaber was claimed by the Sith lord Maul, his killer.

The blade stayed with Maul until it was found by the Mandalorian Sabine Wren of the Spectres in Dathomir. She trained with the weapon under Jedi Knight Kannan Jarrus before defeating Viceroy Gar Saxon of House Vizsla and becoming its rightful owner.

Sabine eventually handed it to Bo-Katan because she believed that Bo-Katan was the right person to lead the Mandalorians.

The Darksaber remained in her possession until it fell into the hands of Moff Gideon and ultimately Din Djarin. This is why Bo-Katan refused to take the weapon from Djarin, as she had already received it as a gift once before.

It is unclear how Moff Gideon gained possession of the Darksaber before losing it to Din Djarin

She felt that receiving it outside of battle yet again would not legitimize her claim as the ruler of Mandalore. Djarin also had to duel Paz Vizsla, another member of the Children of the Watch and ancestor of Tarre Vizsla.

Din Djarin is the current owner of the weapon and occasionally uses it in battle. The Children of the Watch believe that the blade is cursed and would lead to the destruction of Mandalore and its people if received outside of combat.
