Sergio Ciscar: Muted character explained

In Muted, Sergio Ciscar is the infamous Balcony Killer who apparently killed his parents six years ago by pushing them off their house’s balcony. Arón Piper plays Sergio.

Sergio is released from prison after serving six years for murdering his own parents, Blanca and Javier. Since the incident, he hasn’t spoken a word to anyone, and he only talks to select people when he wants to.

An opportunity at a greenhouse run by Natanael Torroja, Sergio’s tutor assigned by the judge, gave Sergio an early release. Although he has been released and is on probation, he is strictly observed by Ana, a psychiatrist, and her team.

The job of Ana’s team is to determine the psychological state of Sergio and his potential level of threat while he rejoins society.

The case of Sergio Ciscar

According to Ana’s research, Sergio is extremely intelligent, with an IQ of 154. Silence is his way of dominating others. He does it so that everyone will keep an eye on him. He is a malignant narcissist and will enjoy this experiment if he finds out that Ana’s team is watching him.

Sergio’s mother, Blanca, was a psychiatrist. When she realized how special her son is, she started focusing on his education. Something went wrong as Sergio alternated academic success with a progressive emotional detachment from his family.

Sergio reacts to the reconstruction of the crime scene at his house

When he stopped speaking after becoming the Balcony Killer, he didn’t even try to defend himself during trials or the reconstruction of the crime scene. He kept quiet all the time.

During the incident, Sergio’s younger sister, Noa, was present at home. Sergio lost touch with Noa after going inside the prison. Since Sergio kept his mouth shut, the police examined how the events transpired, and their version was accepted.

Ana’s experiment

Sergio’s case was Ana’s first professional job. She was not able to build a psychological profile of him back then. Now, Ana’s team’s plan is to make Sergio face his past and assess his self-control to get the job done.

To do that, they have installed hidden cameras in his house, and they are keeping an eye on him outside through the cameras on the streets.

Ana also sends her teammates to follow him. They usually have a button camera on their torsos. Lastly, the ankle monitor on Sergio’s leg also gives them updates on his heart rate.

Ana goes above and beyond to get Sergio to open up. This involves her convincing Marta, an admirer of Sergio, to form an intimate bond with him.

With the help of Marta, she retrieves videos Sergio has that are inside Noa’s old phone. She also proves that Sergio has a heart too, as her team observes him getting emotional after watching Noa’s videos.

The videos also reveal that Sergio was on medications before his parents died. To get to the bottom of the truth, Ana approaches an old friend of hers. It is then revealed that Ana once worked under Sergio’s mother, Blanca.

Blanca’s experiments on Sergio

Ana receives a briefcase full of Blanca’s research on Sergio. As told by her friend, when Blanca found out that Sergio is special, she also learned that he has problems with self-control.

Sergio suffered from violent episodes, and they became Blanca’s obsession. Since Sergio’s father, Javier, used to collaborate with several laboratories running clinical trials, she retrieved various drugs from him and used them to treat Sergio.

Ana later finds one of these drugs in a hidden room inside Sergio’s apartment, where Blanca kept the rest of her research.

The truth behind Sergio’s parents’ death

Sergio’s search for Noa brings him face-to-face with Ana, who has become obsessed with him. To understand him and comfort him, she attempts to use her ace, as in her adopted daughter, who is none other than Noa.

It’s all chaos at Sergio’s apartment when Beñat, Ana’s husband, protests against letting Noa meet Sergio and when Marta and Eneko show up. Once everything is calmed down, Sergio explains that his mother planned to medicate Noa too.

Sergio struggles to digest the truth behind his parents’ death

Sergio stood up against her the day she died to protect Noa. Sergio’s father, Javier, agreed with him, and an argument ensued. Javier accidentally pushed his wife off the balcony, and out of guilt, he jumped too.

When Noa hears this story, she shows up at Sergio’s house and reveals that what Sergio is saying is not true. She saw what transpired that night. Sergio went through a mental block and attacked his mother, who then fell off the balcony while trying to defend herself. When his father confronted him, Sergio pushed him off too.

Does Sergio die at the end of Muted?

After telling the truth, Noa abandons Sergio and goes back to her father. Sergio walks back to the same balcony where he killed his parents. He invites Ana, who has fallen for him, there too.

The monitors at Ana’s office suggest that one of them fell off the balcony, but Muted doesn’t reveal who.
