Plot summary

Antonia Scott is contemplating her death when she is interrupted by Inspector Jon Gutiérrez who has come to fetch her.

He is there on behalf of her old boss, Mentor, because he got into some trouble and was offered a chance to clear his name.

Antonia has an IQ of 242 and is the “Red Queen” of a secret police project focused on solving the most complicated cases.

Antonia and Jon are called out to Laura Trueba’s house where they find the dead body of her son.

Laura is a millionaire and her son’s body was staged in a very specific manner. Antonia uses her brilliant mind to find out everything she can about the murder.

Mentor tells Jon that he should continue working with Antonia rather than go back to the police because he’s quite clever.

It also helps that Antonia seems to prefer his company more than anyone else. She deduces that the murder is just the first of many, and she is proven right.

Carla Ortiz, the daughter of Ramon Ortiz, is kidnapped the next day. He is one of the wealthiest men in the country and Antonia is brought in to find her.

Also on the case is Detective Parra of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, but he doesn’t appreciate Jon and Antonia’s presence.

A man named Ezequiel has taken responsibility for the murder and Carla’s kidnapping and he doesn’t ask for a ransom.

Instead, he asks Ramon and Laura something else, something they aren’t willing to share with the police.

They discover some important clues and realize that Ezequiel asked the parents for an admission of guilt about something.

They track down Carla’s car and get into a car chase with Ezequiel. They only manage to get a picture of his arm but the chase is an overall failure.

Antonia visits the hospital every night to visit her husband, Marcos, who is in a coma. He is in that state because of her work, and she is after the person responsible.

Carla hears the voice of a woman from the adjoining room and learns that her name is Sandra. The two get to know each other and plot to kill Ezequiel.

One night, she refuses an offer from Jon to be dropped and takes a taxi instead. The taxi driver turns out to be Ezequiel who drugs her and drops her off somewhere else.

She wakes up the next morning in front of an art installation which is evidence to help the investigation.

Antonia and Jon dig into the taxi cab that was used to kidnap her but it leads to a dead end. They do get another lead with the tattoo on Ezequiel’s arm.

They meet an artist named Ladybug whose father drew the tattoos, but he had a stroke and can only communicate by blinking his eyes.

He tells Antonia that the four people who got the same tattoo were members of a new police unit.

Following up on that, they find the address of one of the members, who is blind. He says that one of their teammates, Nicolas Fajardo, might have faked his death.

Meanwhile, the taxi is found after an anonymous tip from a woman, and Parra and his team head to an address registered under Fajardo’s name.

Antonia realizes it is a trap but isn’t able to warn Parra in time. Sandra pretended to help Carla, but she was Ezequiel’s daughter and the real mastermind.

Parra and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit are caught in an explosion and Antonia and John get there soon after.

Parra is gravely injured but he does tell Jon that there was a map of Madrid with a spot circled in the house.

Antonia tells Jon about a man going by the alias “Mr. White” who is the smartest in the world and considers Antonia his enemy.

He walked up to her front door and shot Marcos in the head, sending him into a coma. However, Antonia is not able to catch him and doesn’t know anything else about him either.

After that, her father took custody of Antonia’s son Jorge. Her father is the British ambassador and thinks Antonia isn’t safe to be around.

Ezequiel doesn’t agree with Sandra’s actions all the time but she has a psychological hold over him.

A journalist known to Jon captures a video of him arguing with Parra and takes it to the press to expose him and Antonia.

Their exposure leads to Mentor relieving Antonia as the red queen and she takes her anger out on Jon for betraying her trust because he knew about the video.

Sandra goes out and kidnaps Jorge, and Antonia’s father believes she is the one responsible. He tries to have her arrested but Antonia escapes with Jon’s help.

She goes out on her own while Jon is held at the hospital by the police. Antonia talks to Sandra and gets a clue about her location.

She then sets up a plan to rescue Jon with his mother’s help.

Ending explained:

An early discharge

Jon’s mother cooks up a drug cocktail that will send him into a momentary crisis so that he can get the privacy he needs to escape.

His mother meets him outside with a change of clothes and she gives him her phone which has messages from Antonia on what to do next.

She tells him that he needs to get to the underground network where Ezequiel and Sandra are likely hiding.

She also apologizes for her cold demeanor and thanks him for opening her up.

A route fraught with danger

Antonia finds some graffiti on the walls and realizes what Sandra’s plan is. She’s drawing them in but has set up bombs all along the way for them to trip.

Meanwhile, Sandra tells Ezequiel that he needs to kill Carla and Jorge. Jorge gives Carla an idea about digging a hole, and she digs out a piece of tile to defend herself.

Antonia remembers the locations of the bombs and guides Jon to Sandra’s hiding place.

When they get there, she tells him to take care of Ezequiel while she handles Sandra.

An innate hatred

Antonia lures Sandra out with a recorded message of herself and leaves Ezequiel alone to deal with Jon.

He goes into the Carla’s room but she jumps him and stabs him in the eye with the tile. He gets up and is about to kill her when Jon shows up with his gun.

Sandra and Antonia face off, and Sandra tells Antonia that she was her original target and everyone else was just a a means to an end.

Antonia keeps Sandra talking until she can find the right moment.

Jon and Ezequiel struggle and Ezequiel shoots Jon. He lets Jorge run away but is about to kill Carla when Jon re-emerges and grapples with Ezequeil.

Carla gets a hold of the gun and kills him to save Jon.

Jorge runs into the tunnel where Antonia and Sandra are talking and Sandra catches him. Antonia reminds him of a game they used to play, and asks him to play it again.

When she gives the signal, Jorge ducks and gets away while Antonia and Sandra fire bullets at each other.

Antonia empties her clip and then remembers that there is a bomb near Sandra. She taunts Sandra and pulls her further so that she sets off the bomb.

It’s all just his game

Antonia is reunited with her son and Carla is finally free. Jon is welcomed back to the police as a hero, and Mentor keeps a eye on Antonia from a distance.

He appears to also require the pills that she took, suggesting that he also has a superior intellect.

Everyone is on the road to recovery when Jon visits Antonia with some news. He says that Ezequiel’s daughter had killed herself, and Sandra was just a pretender.

He adds that Sandra’s body was never found, raising doubts about her death.

Antonia begins reanalyzing the whole situation and deduces that Sandra used Ezequiel to get to Antonia, and that she was acting on someone else’s orders.

She tells Jon that their entire case has been orchestrated by Mr. White in some wicked game he’s playing against her.
