Guildford Dudley: My Lady Jane character explained

Guildford Dudley is the lord marrying Jane Grey and he has a secret reason behind choosing her. Edward Bluemel plays the character.

The only things Jane had heard about Guildford Dudley were that he spent most of his nights drinking, fighting, and with women of ill repute.

She encounters Lord Dudley and assumes that is the man she is going to marry so she tries her best to get out of it.

Later that evening, she wanders into an alehouse and meets a charming man who almost sweeps her off her feet but they are split when guards show up.

Jane eventually agrees to marry Guildford but she is surprised to see the same man she met at the alehouse. The Dudley she saw earlier was Guildford’s brother Stan.

Guildford treats Jane with an adversarial attitude but that gradually melts away when she finds out his truth.

A heavy curse

Jane discovers that Guildford is an Ethian who can turn into a horse. Lord Dudley explains that Guildford has no control over his ability and remains a horse from dusk till dawn.

When they are finally able to talk, Guildford says that he married Jane because he believed she was smart enough to figure out a cure for his condition.

She agrees to help him in exchange for a divorce and he accepts. As they spend more time together, Guildford and Jane begin to fall for each other.

However, Guildford often tries to keep his distance because he is ashamed of his Ethianism. Whenever Jane asked him about the first time he changed, he avoided the subject.

She learns from different sources that the first time Guildford changed was when he watched his mother get murdered.

Guildford suspects that his change caused his mother’s death and that is why he considers his condition a curse.

When his father confirms that he killed his mother accidentally and needs to forgive himself, Guildford gains the closure he needed to soothe his mind.

He can change at will when he and Jane are in danger of getting burned alive, and they escape the Tower of London together.

Guildford regularly shows that he has a good heart and then proves that he’s got a sharp mind when they have to decipher Seymour’s secret notes.

His combat prowess is on display when he takes on Jane in a dagger fight in the forest and later on when he duels Seymour in the secret underground zoo.
