Genya’s demon powers in Demon Slayer explained

Genya Shinazugawa sports one of the more distinguishable expressions and acts with utmost fervor in Demon Slayer, making him a unique character, but not as unique as the demon powers that he recently unleashed in a shocking revelation.

Genya Shinazugawa has been diabolically angry ever since he first appeared in Demon Slayer, and his subsequent appearances have all been marked by his loud and articulate expressions of annoyance and anger.

The latest episodes of Demon Slayer season 3 reveal some shockers related to Genya’s past and his powers, one of which enables him to achieve to a certain extent, the abilities and look of a demon.

A shocking countenance

At the end of season 3 episode 5, Genya shocks Tanjiro with nothing but a look, as he turns around to reveal a face the ferocity which is something unusual even for a guy as beastly as Genya.

It all goes down when Tanjiro taps into a new strength boost by making his sword red and erupting in flames, thanks to Nezuko rubbing her blood on it, and easily decapitates Sekido, Urogi, and Karaku’s heads with terrifying ease.

He looks around to see if the fourth Hantengu clone has been decapitated at the same time as well or not since his working theory entails all four to be beheaded simultaneously for the demon to finally die. To his pleasant surprise, he sees Genya standing in front of Aizetsu, whose face has been slashed away in half.

However, in addition to his theory not yielding positive results — the demons are still alive — Tanjiro is further shocked by what he sees Genya has made of himself. Shinazugawa turns his head to look at Tanjiro with a horrifying visage.

He has veins popping all over his face and neck, with a wild, rabid breathing speed and expressions. He also has yellow frosted tips now and fashions sharp nails. All of this screams of the demon, and Tanjiro is quick to realize that, voicing his fears to him.

Source & abilities

Contrary to what many might think at the start, Genya’s demonic appearance and powers are not the results of him becoming a demon. However, he can turn into a demon for short amounts of time.

The way he achieves these transient periods of diabolical strength is by eating away some of the flesh of the demons he’s fighting. Thanks to his formidable jaw and set of teeth, as well as an overtly impressive digestive system, he can absorb the demon powers for brief periods where he achieves strength, speed, and regenerative skills.

However, he is also shown to lose track of his sanity a little bit, but thankfully, Tanjiro helps him snap back to his humanity every time he spaces out and becomes too rabid.

There are a couple of advantages this unique ability lends to Genya, one of which is to compensate for his lack of skills when it comes to breathing techniques. As far as the Demon Slayer manga entails, over the course of future episodes and seasons, Genya is going to utilize these demon powers in the most impressive ways.
