Velma season 2 follows a new horror in Crystal Cove as Velma, Daphne, Fred, and Norville face significant life events. The series is streaming on Max.
Story
There is a new serial killer in Crystal Cove and it is down to Velma once again to find out who it is.
She also has to contend with being popular and dating Daphne, someone who has a significantly different personality which often clashes with her own.
Norville is dealing with the trauma of killing someone and does his best to overcome it. Fred is still in denial about his mother, but he needs to accept the harsher truths of life.
The kids have their issues to deal with and still somehow solve the mystery of the continued deaths in their town.
Positives
The animation is very vibrant and there are occasional callbacks or easter eggs that are fun to spot during the series.
Much of what made the first season unbearable has been toned down and it shows that the writers are headed in the right direction.
Negatives
The meta-storytelling is still prevalent and some jokes exist which do not land perfectly. It all blends for something truly middling.
They have borrowed elements from all Scooby Doo lore and incorporated her in a not-so-interesting narrative. The twists and turns are a tad bit excessive.
The climax devolves spectacularly into the realm of ridiculousness and loses any goodwill established early on.
Verdict
Velma season 2 shows that there were some lessons learned from the backlash toward season 1 and yet, the changes aren’t nearly as satisfactory.
There are some interesting story beats but the series just doesn’t have enough heft to be considered good quality.
