Sofia Mori: The Sympathizer character explained

After moving to the US, the Captain starts dating a woman named Sofia Mori. In The Sympathizer, Sandra Oh plays Sofia.

When the Captain contacts a professor who taught him in college, Professor Hammer, the professor agrees to sponsor him.

The professor introduces him to his secretary, Sofia Mori, who will act as the Captain’s boss. Sofia is a Japanese American who was born and raised in the United States.

Like the Captain, she does not overlook the fact that Hammer is a racist, but unlike the Captain, she does not indulge him with a genial smile.

Falling in love with the Captain

Sofia is one of the few who can see through the Captain’s polite smiles and carefully crafted answers that conceal his true feelings.

It is clear to Sofia, who is much older than the Captain, that the Captain has a talent for making others think he agrees with them without uttering a word.

The realization first strikes her when she overhears him speaking to a journalist, noticing that despite his perfect performance, there is a side of him that is not friendly and polite.

Her conclusions are further confirmed when the Captain is asked to recite a list of his Oriental and Occidental traits at a gathering, and he subtly ridicules the idea.

The two of them get a chance to talk at the gathering. The Captain shares his embarrassing stories with her, but Sofia still senses that the Captain is hiding something.

Eventually, they sleep together and soon after, they fall in love with each other. When the two of them confess that they are getting emotionally attached, Sofia makes it clear that she only believes in free love.

As an independent woman, Sofia has always done things her way, and she is unwilling to change, regardless of her feelings for the Captain.
